# Rupert Colmore

**Rupert McPherson Colmore Jr.** (November 2, 1914 – December 27, 1972) was a [college football](/source/College_football) player. A prominent [tackle](/source/Tackle_(American_football)), he is the only All-[Southeastern Conference](/source/Southeastern_Conference) selection in the history of the [Sewanee Tigers football](/source/Sewanee_Tigers_football) program.[1][2] [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia_Eagles) coach [Bert Bell](/source/Bert_Bell) selected Colmore for [All-American](/source/College_Football_All-America_Team).[3][4] His father [Rupert Colmore, Sr.](/source/Rupert_Colmore,_Sr.) also played for Sewanee. Colmore turned down the chance to play professional football for Philadelphia and entered business.[5]

## Early years

Colmore was the son of [Rupert Colmore Sr.](/source/Rupert_Colmore_Sr.) He attended the [Baylor School](/source/Baylor_School) in his native [Chattanooga](/source/Chattanooga). He is a member of its sports hall of fame.[5]

## Sewanee

Colmore also ran [track](/source/Track_and_field) and played [basketball](/source/Basketball).[6] He was a member of [Alpha Tau Omega](/source/Alpha_Tau_Omega). He was inducted into the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.[7]

## Personal

Colmore married Virginia Guild.[8][9] He worked for Simplicity System Company in Chattanooga.
