'''Runsa''' is an estate located in [Upplands Väsby Municipality](/source/Upplands_V%C3%A4sby_Municipality) in [Stockholm County](/source/Stockholm_County), [Sweden](/source/Sweden). It the site of the ruins of an ancient [fortification](/source/Hillfort) (''Runsa fornborg'') and of Runsa Manor (''Runsa slott'') which was built in the middle of the 17th century.<ref>[http://www.upplandsvasby.se/filearchive/Enheter_EJ_blanketter/KLK/Information/Engelsk-for-Web.pdf ''History''] (Discover Upplands Väsby municipality)</ref><ref>[http://www.upplandsvasby.se/Toppmeny/Kommunen/Enheter/Miljo--och-halsoskyddskontoret/Naturguiden/Runsa-fornborg.html ''Runsa fornborg''] (Upplands Väsby kommun)</ref>

==History==
Runsa was the site of a prehistoric hill fortification. Runsa was strategically situated on a 30 metre high rock promontory in Lake [Mälaren](/source/M%C3%A4laren), with views towards [Sigtuna](/source/Sigtuna). The ancient fort covers an area of 200 x 100 metres. The site was excavated first in 1902 with the participation of the then Crown Prince, later King [Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden](/source/Gustaf_VI_Adolf_of_Sweden). It was later investigated by archaeologists in 1992.<ref>{{cite web|url= https://runeberg.org/nfcc/0662.html|title= Runsa

Below the ruins is a stone ship burial area (''Runsa skeppssättning''; [sv](/source/%3Asv%3ARunsa_skeppss%C3%A4ttning)) with some 30 graves. The burial ground is made up of round stones estimated to date from 400 - 500 AD. It is 56 feet from the bow to the stern and is one of the best known stone circles in Sweden.<ref>[http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=12162 ''Runsa - Standing Stones in Sweden in Uppland''] (The Megalithic Portal)]</ref>

Runsa Manor (''Runsa slott'') is surrounded by these ruins and other monuments. In 1313 the estate was sold to the [Archbishop of Uppsala](/source/Archbishop_of_Uppsala). It was suppressed by King [Gustav Vasa](/source/Gustav_Vasa), but was sold to [Lord High Constable](/source/Lord_High_Constable_of_Sweden) [Jacob De la Gardie](/source/Jacob_De_la_Gardie) (1583–1652). The main building dates from the mid-1600s and was most possibly built by his widow [Ebba Brahe](/source/Ebba_Brahe) (1596-1674). She willed the estate to her daughter Christina Catharine De la Gardie (1632–1704), wife of [Gustaf Otto Stenbock](/source/Gustaf_Otto_Stenbock) (1614–1685).<ref>{{cite web|url= https://sok.riksarkivet.se/sbl/Presentation.aspx?id=17379|title= Jakob P.
