The '''Rundle Group''' is a [stratigraphic unit](/source/stratigraphic_unit) of [Mississippian](/source/Mississippian_age) [age](/source/Geochronology) in the [Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin](/source/Western_Canadian_Sedimentary_Basin).

It takes the name from [Mount Rundle](/source/Mount_Rundle) (itself taking the name from [Robert Terrill Rundle](/source/Robert_Terrill_Rundle)), and was first described in outcrops at the northern side of the mountain in [Banff National Park](/source/Banff_National_Park) by R.J.W. Douglas in 1953.<ref>Douglas, R.J.W., 1953b. Carboniferous stratigraphy in the southern Foothills of Alberta; Alberta Soc. Petrol. Geol., 3rd Ann. Field Conf. Guidebook, p. 66–88.</ref>

==Lithology==
The Rundle Group consists of massive [limestone](/source/limestone) interbedded with dark argillaceous limestone. [Chert](/source/Chert) nodules are observed in the shaley beds, and [crinoid](/source/crinoid)s and [brachiopod](/source/brachiopod)s are observed in the clean massive beds.<ref name=lexicon/> [Dolimitization](/source/Dolimitization) is observed in the [Elkton Member](/source/Elkton_Member) of the [Turner Valley Formation](/source/Turner_Valley_Formation).

==Distribution==
The Rundle Group reaches a maximum thickness of {{convert|741|ft|m|-1}} at [Tunnel Mountain](/source/Tunnel_Mountain). It thins out toward east and north and is completely [eroded](/source/erosion) or absent in east [central](/source/central_Alberta) and only the lower part occurs in [southern Alberta](/source/southern_Alberta).<ref name=lexicon/>

==Relationship to other units==

The Rundle Group is [disconformably](/source/unconformity) overlain by the [Rocky Mountain Formation](/source/Rocky_Mountain_Formation) in the front ranges of the [Canadian Rockies](/source/Canadian_Rockies) and by the [Fernie Formation](/source/Fernie_Formation) in the foothills and by [Cretaceous](/source/Cretaceous) beds in the prairies. It conformably overlies the [Banff Formation](/source/Banff_Formation).<ref name=lexicon/>

The Rundle Group can be correlated with the [Mission Canyon Formation](/source/Mission_Canyon_Formation) in southern Saskatchewan, northeastern Montana and North Dakota.

===Subdivisions===
The Rundle Group includes the [Mount Head Formation](/source/Mount_Head_Formation) and [Livingstone Formation](/source/Livingstone_Formation) in the [Rocky Mountains](/source/Rocky_Mountains); by the [Turner Valley Formation](/source/Turner_Valley_Formation), [Shunda Formation](/source/Shunda_Formation) and [Pekisko Formation](/source/Pekisko_Formation) in the foothills and plains. It is equivalent to the [Debolt Formation](/source/Debolt_Formation) and [Prophet Formation](/source/Prophet_Formation) in north-eastern British Columbia and west-[northern Alberta](/source/northern_Alberta).<ref name="lexicon" /> [Debolt](/source/Debolt_Formation), [Shunda](/source/Shunda_Formation) and [Pekisko](/source/Pekisko_Formation) formations are staked in the [Fort Nelson](/source/Fort_Nelson%2C_British_Columbia) area.
