'''Tiāntóng Rújìng''' (天童如淨; Japanese: '''Tendō Nyojō''') (1163–1228) was a [Caodong](/source/Caodong) [Buddhist](/source/Buddhist) monk living in Jìngdé Temple<ref name="zenheritage">{{cite book |author=Ferguson, Andrew E. |title=Zen's Chinese Heritage: The Masters and Their Teachings |year=2000 |publisher=[Wisdom Publications](/source/Wisdom_Publications) |page=454? | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=qWrYGZG2yd4C&q=Tiantong+Rujing&pg=PA454 |isbn=978-0861711635 }}</ref> (景徳寺; Japanese: Keitoku-ji) on Tiāntóng Mountain (天童山; Japanese: Tendōzan) in [Yinzhou District, Ningbo](/source/Yinzhou_District%2C_Ningbo). He taught and gave [dharma transmission](/source/dharma_transmission) to [Sōtō Zen](/source/S%C5%8Dt%C5%8D_Zen) founder [Dōgen](/source/D%C5%8Dgen)<ref name="zenheritage"/><ref>{{cite book |author=Warner, Brad |title=[Sit Down and Shut Up](/source/Sit_Down_and_Shut_Up) |date=May 2007 |publisher=New World Library |page=[https://archive.org/details/sitdownshutuppun00warn/page/10 10] |isbn=978-1-57731-559-9 }}</ref> as well as early Sōtō monk [Jakuen](/source/Jakuen) (寂円 Jìyuán).

His teacher was Xuedou Zhijian<ref name="zenheritage"/> (雪竇智鑑, 1105–1192), who was the sixteenth-generation dharma descendant of [Huineng](/source/Huineng).

According to [Keizan](/source/Keizan), when Ruijing became a leader, he didn't put himself above the other monks. He wore the black surplice and robe of a monk. He was given a purple vestment of honor by the emperor of China, but he declined it. Even after reaching enlightenment, he was willing to clean the bathroom.<ref>{{cite book|last1=Keizan|first1=Jōkin|title=Transmission of Light|date=6 June 1990|isbn=0-86547-433-8}}</ref>

He is traditionally the originator of the terms ''[shikantaza](/source/shikantaza)''<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.caodongzazen.com/english-CaodongFamilyTree.htm |title=Caodong Family Tree |accessdate=May 17, 2012 |publisher=caodongzazen.com |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20121224012107/http://www.caodongzazen.com/english-CaodongFamilyTree.htm |archivedate=December 24, 2012 }}</ref> and ''shinjin-datsuraku'' ("casting off of body and mind").
