Lexow graduated from the [University of Kiel](/source/University_of_Kiel) and was active in the [Revolutions of 1848 in Germany](/source/Revolutions_of_1848_in_Germany). He fled to [England](/source/England), where he married Caroline King in [Hull](/source/Kingston_upon_Hull),<ref name=schlegel/> and then traveled on to the [United States](/source/United_States), where he settled in New York City and founded the ''[Belletristisches Journal](/source/Belletristisches_Journal)'' in 1852.

Rudolph and Caroline Lexow were the parents of New York City attorney [Charles King Lexow](/source/Charles_K._Lexow), New York state senator [Clarence Lexow](/source/Clarence_Lexow), Allan Lexow and Rudolph G.
