German psychiatrist (1835–1900)

Rudolf Arndt

**Rudolf Gottfried Arndt** (31 March 1835 – 29 January 1900) was a German [psychiatrist](/source/Psychiatrist) from [Bialken](/source/Bia%C5%82ki%2C_Pomeranian_Voivodeship), [district of Marienwerder](/source/Marienwerder_(district)).

## Biography

Arndt studied in [Greifswald](/source/Greifswald) and [Halle](/source/Halle%2C_Saxony-Anhalt). As a student, his instructors included [Felix von Niemeyer](/source/Felix_von_Niemeyer) (1820–1871), [Heinrich Adolf von Bardeleben](/source/Heinrich_Adolf_von_Bardeleben) (1819–1895), and [Heinrich Philipp August Damerow](/source/Heinrich_Philipp_August_Damerow) (1798–1866).[1] He was conferred [doctor](/source/Physician) of [medicine](/source/Medicine) on 20 February 1860. From 1861 he maintained a private practice, and also participated in the [Second Schleswig War](/source/Second_Schleswig_War) (1864), [Austro-Prussian War](/source/Austro-Prussian_War) (1866) and [Franco-Prussian War](/source/Franco-Prussian_War) (1870–71).

In 1867 he obtained his habilitation, subsequently serving as director of the *Irren-Heil- und Pflege-Anstalt* in [Greifswald](/source/Greifswald). In 1873 he became an associate professor of psychiatry at Greifswald.[2] He died of [angina pectoris](/source/Angina_pectoris).[3]

He is known today for the "[Arndt-Schulz rule](/source/Arndt-Schulz_rule)", a [pharmacologic](/source/Pharmacology) principle of [homeopathy](/source/Homeopathy) that is named in conjunction with German [chemist](/source/Chemist) [Hugo Schulz](/source/Hugo_Schulz) (1853-1932).[4] He is also remembered for his investigations of [neurasthenia](/source/Neurasthenia).[5][6]
