**Rubiera** ([Reggiano](/source/Emilian_language#Dialects): *Rubēra*) is a *[comune](/source/Comune)* (municipality) in the [Province of Reggio Emilia](/source/Province_of_Reggio_Emilia) in the [Italian](/source/Italy) region [Emilia-Romagna](/source/Emilia-Romagna), located on the [Via Emilia](/source/Via_Emilia) about 50 kilometres (31 mi) northwest of [Bologna](/source/Bologna) and about 13 kilometres (8 mi) southeast of [Reggio Emilia](/source/Reggio_Emilia).

## History

The original name of the city was *Corte de Herberia*, probably derived from the [Celtic](/source/Celtic_languages) *er-beria*, meaning "in the middle of the plain". The Roman emperors [Gallienus](/source/Gallienus) and [Valerianus](/source/Valerianus) built a bridge over the [Secchia](/source/Secchia) river at this location in AD 259.

The first historical mention of Rubiera is from 915, at which time it was a [fief](/source/Fief) of the [Supponidi](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Supponidi&action=edit&redlink=1) family; the city later became a fief of the [Obertenghi](/source/Obertenghi) family. After a period of decline, it recovered some importance in the 12th century under the *comune* of [Reggio Emilia](/source/Reggio_Emilia), due to its strategic position and the fact that the city had a *castrum* (castle) and massive walls. At later times it was a possession of the [House of Este](/source/House_of_Este), a [Papal](/source/Papal_states) possession, and part of the [Duchy of Modena and Reggio](/source/Duchy_of_Modena_and_Reggio), during which period the castle was used as a prison.

Among the churches in the community are:[3]

- [Santissima Annunziata](/source/Santissima_Annunziata%2C_Rubiera) (18th century)

- [Santi Faustino e Giovita](/source/Santi_Faustino_e_Giovita%2C_Rubiera) (10th century)

- [Sant'Agata a Casale](/source/Sant'Agata_a_Casale%2C_Rubiera) (16th century)

- Parish church (18th century)
