# RsaOG

**RsaOG** (an acronym for [RNA](/source/RNA) *[S. aureus](/source/S._aureus)* [Orsay](/source/Orsay) G)[1] is a [non-coding RNA](/source/Non-coding_RNA) that was discovered in the [pathogenic](/source/Pathogenic) bacteria *Staphylococcus aureus* N315 using a large-scale [computational screening](/source/Bioinformatics) based on [phylogenetic](/source/Phylogenetic) profiling.[2] It was first identified, but not named, in 2005.[3] RsaOG has since been identified in other strains of *Staphylococcus aureus* under the name of [RsaI](/source/Rsa_RNA),[4] it has also been discovered in other members of the *[Staphylococcus](/source/Staphylococcus)* [genus](/source/Genus) (such as *[Staphylococcus carnosus](/source/Staphylococcus_carnosus)*) but in no other bacteria.[1]

The RsaOG gene is [conserved](/source/Conserved_sequence) in all Staphylococcaceae sequenced [genomes](/source/Genome), its [secondary structure](/source/Secondary_structure) contains two highly conserved [unpaired sequences](/source/Base_pair) which have the ability to form a [pseudoknot](/source/Pseudoknot).[1] [Northern blot](/source/Northern_blot) experiments show that RsaOG is expressed in several *S. aureus* strains.[2][4] Mapping of RsaOG ends indicates a size of 146 [nucleotides](/source/Nucleotide) in *S. aureus*.[4] RsaOG ncRNA is thought to have [trans-acting](/source/Trans-acting) regulatory functions, possibly on fine-tuning [toxin](/source/Toxin) production or aiding with [invasion](/source/Infection).[1]
