# Rowland Raw

**Rowland Raw** (16 July 1884 – 7 August 1915) was an [English](/source/English_people) first-class [cricketer](/source/Cricket) and [British Army](/source/British_Army) officer.

Raw was born at [Pietermaritzburg](/source/Pietermaritzburg) in the [Colony of Natal](/source/Colony_of_Natal) to George and Edith Raw.[1] He was educated in England at [Clifton College](/source/Clifton_College),[2] before going up to [Trinity College, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_College,_Cambridge), though he did not represent the university in cricket.[1] He made his debut in [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) for the [Gentlemen of England](/source/Gentlemen_of_England) when he played two matches against [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) at [Crystal Palace](/source/Crystal_Palace_Park_Cricket_Ground) in June 1905.[3] He scored 48 runs across his two matches, with a high score of 47.[4] After leaving Cambridge he married Mary Raw of [Witley, Surrey](/source/Witley).[1] He served in the [First World War](/source/First_World_War) with the [Lancashire Fusiliers](/source/Lancashire_Fusiliers), being commissioned as a [second lieutenant](/source/Second_lieutenant#United_Kingdom_&_other_Commonwealth_countries) in December 1914.[5] He sailed from [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool) in July 1915 to take part in the [Gallipoli Campaign](/source/Gallipoli_Campaign), where he was killed in action at [Suvla](/source/Suvla) on 7 August 1915.[1] He was buried at the [Hill 10 Cemetery](/source/Hill_10_Commonwealth_War_Graves_Commission_Cemetery).[1]
