The Swan at Rowberrow

**Rowberrow** is a small village and former [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish), now in the parish of [Shipham](/source/Shipham) in the [Somerset](/source/Somerset_(district)) district, in the ceremonial county of [Somerset](/source/Somerset), England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 56.[1] On 1 April 1933 the parish was abolished and merged with Shipham.[2]

Rowberrow is near [Churchill](/source/Churchill%2C_Somerset), close to the [Dolebury Warren](/source/Dolebury_Warren) [Iron Age](/source/Iron_Age) [hill fort](/source/Hill_fort).

It is the site of a [Bronze Age](/source/Bronze_Age) [barrow](/source/Tumulus) approximately 20 metres (66 ft) in diameter, which was excavated in 1813,[3] and is believed to have given the village its name as Rowbarrow means 'rough hill' or 'barrow'.[4]

The parish was part of the [Winterstoke](/source/Winterstoke) [Hundred](/source/Hundred_(county_subdivision)).[5]

It was formerly a mining parish producing [calamine](/source/Calamine).[6]

## Church

Rowberrow Church

The parish [Church of St Michael and All Angels](/source/Church_of_St_Michael_and_All_Angels%2C_Rowberrow) dates from the late 14th century, however the nave, chancel and south porch were rebuilt in 1865. It is a Grade II* [listed building](/source/Listed_building).[7]

## Notable residents

The author [Terry Pratchett](/source/Terry_Pratchett) lived in Rowberrow from 1970 to 1993.[8][9][10] His daughter [Rhianna](/source/Rhianna_Pratchett) was born in the village.

The author and cat lover [Doreen Tovey](/source/Doreen_Tovey) lived in Rowberrow from the early fifties until her death in 2008.
