The **Rotokawa Power Station** is a [geothermal](/source/Geothermal_power) power station owned and operated by [Mercury Energy](/source/Mercury_Energy). It is located approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) north east of [Taupō](/source/Taup%C5%8D) in [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand). The station uses a [binary cycle](/source/Binary_cycle) manufactured by [Ormat Industries](/source/Ormat_Industries).

In May 2008, work began on the nearby [Nga Awa Purua Power Station](/source/Nga_Awa_Purua_Power_Station).[1]

## Environmental aspects

Due to the high temperatures associated with the geothermal vent here, this locale is an occurrence of [extremophile](/source/Extremophile) micro-organisms that can thrive on the high vent water temperature.[2]
