The **Rotenberg** is a hill range, up to 317.3 m high, in the [Lower Saxon Hills](/source/Lower_Saxon_Hills) in southeastern [Lower Saxony](/source/Lower_Saxony), [Germany](/source/Germany).

## Geography

The Rotenberg ridge is oriented northwest–southeast and measures about 14 kilometres long by 2 kilometres wide. It lies in the district of [Göttingen](/source/Landkreis_G%C3%B6ttingen) in the southeastern corner of the Lower Saxon Hills. It is located on the southwestern [Harz Foreland](/source/Harz_Foreland) roughly between [Wulften](/source/Wulften_am_Harz) to the northwest, [Hattorf am Harz](/source/Hattorf_am_Harz) and [Pöhlde](/source/P%C3%B6hlde) to the north, [Silkerode](/source/Silkerode) to the east, [Rhumspringe](/source/Rhumspringe) and [Gieboldehausen](/source/Gieboldehausen) to the south and [Bilshausen](/source/Bilshausen) to the west. Somewhat further away are [Osterode am Harz](/source/Osterode_am_Harz) to the north, [Herzberg am Harz](/source/Herzberg_am_Harz) to the northeast, [Bad Lauterberg](/source/Bad_Lauterberg) to the east, [Duderstadt](/source/Duderstadt) to the south, [Göttingen](/source/G%C3%B6ttingen) to the southwest and [Northeim](/source/Northeim) to the northwest.

According to the official classification of [natural regions of Germany](/source/Natural_regions_of_Germany) the ridge belongs to the landscape unit of the [Eichsfeld Basin](/source/Eichsfeld_Basin) in the [Weser-Leine Uplands](/source/Weser-Leine_Uplands).

The Rotenberg is surrounded by the following other ranges: the [Harz Mountains](/source/Harz_Mountains) to the north and, somewhat further away, the [Ohm Hills](/source/Ohm_Hills) to the southeast and the [Göttingen Forest](/source/G%C3%B6ttingen_Forest) to the southwest.

The Rotenberg hills lie on the [watershed](/source/Drainage_divide) between the [Oder](/source/Oder_(Harz)) and [Beber](/source/Beber_(Oder)) rivers in the north and the [Rhume](/source/Rhume) and [Eller](/source/Eller_(river)) rivers in the south. These rivers and the small streams that rise in the hills belong to the catchment area of the [Leine](/source/Leine_(Aller)), several kilometres to the west.
