==Playing career==
Johnston played [junior ice hockey](/source/junior_ice_hockey) starting in the [MHL](/source/Maritime_Junior_Hockey_League) with the [Summerside Western Capitals](/source/Summerside_Western_Capitals) before graduating to play three seasons in the [Quebec Major Junior Hockey League](/source/Quebec_Major_Junior_Hockey_League) (QMJHL) with the [Moncton Wildcats](/source/Moncton_Wildcats), [Victoriaville Tigres](/source/Victoriaville_Tigres) and [Charlottetown Islanders](/source/Charlottetown_Islanders). He went undrafted by teams in the [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) (NHL). As a free agent, he attended the NHL's [New York Islanders](/source/New_York_Islanders) training camp in 2014, but had his jaw broken in a fight. Due to the injury, he missed two months of his final season with Charlottetown. At the end of the [2015–16 season](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_NHL_season), his first professional year, Johnston split his time between the Islanders' [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) (AHL) affiliate, the [Bridgeport Sound Tigers](/source/Bridgeport_Sound_Tigers) and the [Missouri Mavericks](/source/Missouri_Mavericks) of the [ECHL](/source/ECHL).
