# Ross Beever

**Ross Ewen Beever** (3 January 1946 – 3 June 2010) was a New Zealand geneticist and [mycologist](/source/Mycologist).

## Academic career

Born in [Te Kūiti](/source/Te_K%C5%ABiti), Beever completed a [MSc](/source/MSc) at [Auckland University](/source/Auckland_University) with a thesis *Growth of fungi on potato extract media* and a PhD at [Leeds](/source/Leeds) entitled *Genetic and biochemical studies of [phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase](/source/Phosphoenolpyruvate_carboxykinase) in [Neurospora crassa](/source/Neurospora_crassa)*.

On his return to New Zealand he worked for [DSIR](/source/Department_of_Scientific_and_Industrial_Research_(New_Zealand)) and later [Landcare Research](/source/Landcare_Research), principally on *[Botrytis cinerea](/source/Botrytis_cinerea)* and other important plant diseases including *[Phytoplasma australiense](/source/Phytoplasma_australiense)*, responsible for [cabbage tree](/source/Cordyline_australis) mortality, and *[Phytophthora](/source/Phytophthora)* species responsible for [kauri dieback](/source/Kauri_dieback).[1][2][3]

He was elected a [Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Society_of_New_Zealand) in 2004.[4]

Beever died in [Auckland](/source/Auckland) in 2010.[5] The Ross Beever Memorial Mycological Award was established by the New Zealand Mycological Society in 2014.[6] Fungus [taxa](/source/Taxon) named in his honour include the species *[Colletotrichum beeveri](/source/Colletotrichum_beeveri)*[7] and *[Cortinarius beeverorum](/source/Cortinarius_beeverorum)*,[8] and the genus *[Rossbeevera](/source/Rossbeevera)*.[9]
