'''Rone Church''' ({{langx|sv|Rone kyrka}}) is a medieval church in [Rone](/source/Rone%2C_Gotland) on the Swedish island of [Gotland](/source/Gotland). The Gothic church contains a number of medieval murals. It is part of the [Church of Sweden](/source/Church_of_Sweden) and lies in the [Diocese of Visby](/source/Diocese_of_Visby).

==History==
The presently visible, [Gothic](/source/Gothic_architecture) church was very probably preceded by a smaller, [Romanesque](/source/Romanesque_architecture) church. Of this first church nothing remains except a few fragments, later incorporated in the Gothic church. The oldest parts of the present structure are the [nave](/source/nave_(architecture)) and [choir](/source/choir_(architecture)), erected c. 1300, with the lower part of the tower from the same date. It was extended upwards during the middle of the 14th century, making the tall tower the youngest part of the church. The church has remained largely unchanged ever since.<ref name="gotkyrkor">{{cite book |editor1-last=Lagerlöf|editor1-first=Erland|title= Gotlands kyrkor|language=sv|year= 1973|publisher= Rabén & Sjögren|location= Uddevalla|isbn= 9129410355|pages=226–228}}</ref>

A renovation was carried out in 1913–15, and again in 1954–55 by architect Eiler Graebe.<ref name="gotkyrkor"/>

The church is a relatively homogeneous Gothic church.<ref name="gotkyrkor"/> The {{convert|60|m|ft|adj=on}} tall tower has been used as a [navigational aid](/source/navigational_aid) ever since the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages).<ref name="gotkyrkor"/><ref name=svkyrkan>{{cite web |url= http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/default.aspx?id=667182|title= Rone kyrka|author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |publisher= Church of Sweden|language=sv|access-date=29 June 2014}}</ref><ref name=rone>{{cite web|url=http://www.rone.nu/sevart.htm|title=Sevärt|author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.-->|publisher=Rone local history society|language=sv|access-date=29 June 2014|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131207043718/http://rone.nu/sevart.htm|archive-date=7 December 2013}}</ref> It was made by the same stonemason and workshop responsible for creating the towers at [Öja](/source/%C3%96ja_Church), [Stånga](/source/St%C3%A5nga_Church), [Dalhem](/source/Dalhem_Church) and [Gothem](/source/Gothem_Church) churches, an anonymous artist or workshop to whom art historians have assigned the [notname](/source/notname) [Egypticus](/source/Egypticus). The northern portal of the tower has a stone [relief](/source/relief) depicting [Saint Botvid](/source/Saint_Botvid), lying on a fish; a motif found on all the churches by Master Egypticus. The two southern portals of the church (leading to the nave and choir, respectively) also feature sculpted [capitals](/source/capital_(architecture)).<ref name="gotkyrkor"/>

Inside, the church is decorated with [medieval mural](/source/Church_murals_in_Sweden)s from two different periods. The oldest, dating from c. 1300, are purely decorative, depicting floral motifs. The other set dates from the middle of the 15th century and have been identified as being by the [Master of the Passion of Christ](/source/Master_of_the_Passion_of_Christ). They display scenes from the [Passion of Christ](/source/Passion_of_Christ), the childhood of Christ and (possibly) the [Binding of Isaac](/source/Binding_of_Isaac).<ref name="gotkyrkor"/> The church also still has some medieval [stained glass](/source/stained_glass) window panes. [Medieval stained glass in Sweden](/source/Medieval_stained_glass_in_Sweden) survives in only about thirty churches. The ones in Rone are among the oldest of their kind on Gotland and may originally have been placed in the earlier, Romanesque church. They are now placed in the three east windows and were supplemented with imitations during the 1913-15 renovation. The medieval stained glass windows depict scenes from the childhood of Christ, the [raising of Lazarus](/source/raising_of_Lazarus), [Mary Magdalene](/source/Mary_Magdalene) and other religious motifs.<ref name="gotkyrkor"/>

Among the church furnishings, the [triumphal cross](/source/triumphal_cross) and its two adjacent figures depicting [Mary](/source/Mary%2C_mother_of_Jesus) and [John the Evangelist](/source/John_the_Evangelist) is a locally crafted piece made c. 1400. A medieval [cope](/source/cope) has also been preserved in the church collections. The other furnishings date from after the [reformation](/source/Reformation_in_Denmark). The [altarpiece](/source/altarpiece) is from 1694 and the [pulpit](/source/pulpit) from 1595. The [baptismal font](/source/baptismal_font) was made in 1664 while the well-preserved [pew](/source/pew)s date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The [organ](/source/organ_(music)) is from 1876.<ref name="gotkyrkor"/>

Rone church has been proved to be the tallest church on the island Gotland.
