# Ronan Moore

**Ronan Moore** is an Irish politician, secondary school teacher, and author who has served as a member of [Meath County Council](/source/Meath_County_Council) since 2019. Representing the [Social Democrats](/source/Social_Democrats_(Ireland)) in the [Trim](/source/Trim,_County_Meath) [local electoral area](/source/Local_electoral_area), he was first elected in the [2019 local elections](/source/2019_Meath_County_Council_election) and successfully retained his seat in [2024](/source/2024_Meath_County_Council_election). He has served as [Cathaoirleach](/source/Cathaoirleach_(local_government)) of the Trim [Municipal District Council](/source/Local_electoral_area#Municipal_districts) since 2024.

His books have a particular focus on the quirks of [Irish culture](/source/Culture_of_Ireland), and [Irish mythology](/source/Irish_mythology).

## Early Life

Moore grew up in [Summerhill](/source/Summerhill,_County_Meath) and in [Trim](/source/Trim,_County_Meath), [County Meath](/source/County_Meath).[1]

He received a degree in English and History from [NUI Galway](/source/NUI_Galway) followed by a Masters in [Sustainable Development](/source/Sustainable_development) from [Dublin Institute of Technology](/source/Dublin_Institute_of_Technology).[2]

## Career

He has worked with [Trócaire](/source/Tr%C3%B3caire) in [Nigeria](/source/Nigeria). As of 2020, he works as a secondary school [English](/source/English_studies) and history teacher at [St Patrick's Classical School](/source/St_Patrick's_Classical_School) in [Navan](/source/Navan).[1][2][3]

## Writing

In 2015 Moore published a book, *Irishology*, which discusses some of the strange quirks of Irish culture. This would become the first of a trilogy of similar books, being followed in 2016 by *Irishography*, which discussed parts of [Ireland's geography](/source/Geography_of_Ireland),[4] and by *Irishisms* in 2017.

In 2020 Moore published "Young Fionn", a retelling of [the Boyhood Deeds of Fionn](/source/The_Boyhood_Deeds_of_Fionn) aimed at a young audience; this was published by [Gill Books](/source/Gill_(publisher)) and illustrated by Alexandra Colombo.[3]

## Politics

At the [2019 Meath County Council election](/source/2019_Meath_County_Council_election), Moore won a seat for the [Social Democrats](/source/Social_Democrats_(Ireland)) in the Trim local electoral area.[1][5] In 2020 he was elected as [Cathaoirleach of Trim Municipal District Council](/source/Cathaoirleach_(local_government)) following its second [AGM](/source/Annual_general_meeting).[6] At the [2020 general election](/source/2020_Irish_general_election) he stood in the [Meath West](/source/Meath_West) constituency,[7] but was not elected.[8][9] He was re-elected at the [2024 Meath County Council election](/source/2024_Meath_County_Council_election).[10][11] He also stood unsuccessfully at the [2024 general election](/source/2024_Irish_general_election) for Meath West.[12][13][14] He has served as the Cathaoirleach of Trim Municipal District since 2024, and was re-elected in 2025.[15]

Moore, along with other councilors, opposed a motion to remove the books [To Kill a Mockingbird](/source/To_Kill_a_Mockingbird) and [Of Mice and Men](/source/Of_Mice_and_Men) from the school curriculum due to [racist language](/source/Racial_slur). He defended the books by saying they were important in teaching students about the history of [racism](/source/Racism) and [racial injustice](/source/Social_inequality).[16][17]

## Personal Life

As of 2015, he lives in Trim with his wife Frances Haworth, and three children.[4][2] He is a board member of the Trim Family Resource Centre.[18]
