==Career==
===Initial television work and journalism===
By age 15, Leshem was working in the television industry on educational and youth programming as a researcher and editing coordinator. He helped to develop ''Zombit'', a computer program that became a television show about technology and the internet. Leshem was also a journalist for ''[Ma'ariv La'noar](/source/Ma'ariv_La'noar)'' at this time.<ref name=haaretz>{{Cite web |author=נעמה לנסקי |title=ראש ענף התנהלות |url=https://www.haaretz.co.il/misc/2007-02-06/ty-article/0000017f-f4d4-d044-adff-f7fd80ec0000 |website=Haaretz הארץ |language=he}}</ref>

He worked as a news editor at ''[Yediot Ahronot](/source/Yedioth_Ahronoth)'' in 1998 and became the head of the reporters' department two years later. During those years, he also worked as a magazine writer publishing investigative reports about Israel's prison system and animal testing, conducting interviews with Palestinian figures and politicians as well as what was going on within Palestinian territories.<ref name=ynet>{{Cite web |last=לשם |first=רון |date=2024-11-28 |title="משנות ה'לא' בחיי למדתי יותר מכל תחנה אחרת" |url=https://www.ynet.co.il/entertainment/article/yokra14162890 |access-date=2025-04-11 |website=Ynet |language=he}}</ref>

Leshem was appointed deputy editor-in-chief and head of the news division at ''[Maariv](/source/Maariv_(newspaper))'' in 2001. ===Television production and adaptation of ''Euphoria''===
Leshem transitioned from print media to television in 2005.<ref name="Israel_2007_JustinRudzki" /> From 2006 to 2009, he worked in content development for [Keshet Broadcasting](/source/Keshet_Media_Group), where he became chief of content and programming at the network. Leshem managed both its reality/entertainment/documentary and drama divisions. Israeli television series he was involved with include ''[Arab Labor](/source/Arab_Labor)'', ''[the A-word](/source/Yellow_Peppers)'', ''[Beauty and the Baker](/source/Beauty_and_the_Baker)'', ''[False Flag](/source/False_Flag_(TV_series))'' and ''[Prisoners of War](/source/Prisoners_of_War_(TV_series))'', which was later adapted into the American series ''[Homeland](/source/Homeland_(TV_series))''.<ref name="AICF">{{cite web |title=Ron Leshem |url=https://aicf.org/artist/ron-leshem/|access-date=November 29, 2020 |work=America-Israel Cultural Foundation}}</ref>

In 2011, Leshem co-created and co-wrote his first original drama series, ''[The Gordin Cell](/source/The_Gordin_Cell)'', which was about a Russian spy family pressured by their Moscow handlers to recruit their young son.<ref name="HollywoodReporter_2019_RebeccaSun" /> It received multiple nominations at the [Awards of the Israeli Television Academy](/source/Awards_of_the_Israeli_Television_Academy).{{citation needed|date=December 2025}} The series was sold for adaptation to [NBC](/source/NBC), first by [Peter Berg](/source/Peter_Berg) and later by [George Nolfi](/source/George_Nolfi). ''[Allegiance](/source/Allegiance_(American_TV_series))'' aired on NBC in 2015 and was canceled after one season.<ref name="AICF" />

He co-created the original ''[Euphoria](/source/Euphoria_(Israeli_TV_series))'' in 2012 along with director Daphna Levin.<ref name="HollywoodReporter_2019_RebeccaSun" /> It was motivated by Leshem wanting to create a more realistic show about teenagers and described as "''[Trainspotting](/source/Trainspotting_(film))'' meets [Gus Van Sant](/source/Gus_Van_Sant)".<ref>{{cite web |last1=Orlin |first1=Scott |title=Ron Leshem and Amit Cohen: “Valley of Tears” |url=https://goldenglobes.com/articles/ron-leshem-and-amit-cohen-valley-tears/ |website=Golden Globes |date=1 December 2020}}</ref> The series had a low budget and did not have the resources to film shorter scenes. It also contained cultural specificities relevant to Israelis and received mixed reviews due to adult content for a conservative audience.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://momentmag.com/euphorias-israeli-predecessor-shows-that-teen-trauma-transcends-culture/?srsltid=AfmBOoq8DxYE-n-gkC4aEpcHUmWCNtluzQwuViMYROmX_mSOn3t_1r1R|title=Euphoria's Israeli Predecessor Shows that Teen Trauma Transcends Culture|website=Moment Mag|date=August 18, 2022|author1=Sarah Sachs|author2=Sasha Tuddenham|access-date=August 3, 2025}}</ref> Over the following years, Leshem pitched an adaptation of the series to American networks and studios. [HBO](/source/HBO) ordered an [American adaption](/source/Euphoria_(American_TV_series)) in 2018 where Leshem was an executive producer alongside being credited as a writer for the pilot episode.<ref name="HollywoodReporter_2019_RebeccaSun" /><ref name="HollywoodReporter_2018_RickPorter">{{cite web |last=Porter |first=Rick |date=July 30, 2018|title=HBO Orders 'Euphoria' to Series, Drake Joins as Executive Producer|url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/hbo-picks-teen-drama-euphoria-adds-drake-as-executive-producer-1130660|work=[The Hollywood Reporter](/source/The_Hollywood_Reporter) |access-date=November 29, 2020 }}</ref>

=== Move to United States, development deals and serial television creation ===

Influenced by the [assassination of Yitzhak Rabin](/source/assassination_of_Yitzhak_Rabin) at a rally in support of the [Oslo Accords](/source/Oslo_Accords), Leshem co-wrote ''[Incitement](/source/Incitement_(film))'' in 2019 as a political thriller profiling Rabin’s assassin, [Yigal Amir](/source/Yigal_Amir), and the influences that shaped his decisions. Leshem stated that "it was never a film about 1995...it's about today—how people are losing faith in democracy and how the politics of hate are taking over."<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2020/03/incitement-co-writer-leshem-sees-israels-political-path-traced|title=In 'Incitement,' co-writer Leshem sees Israel's political path traced|website=Tufts Daily|date=March 3, 2020|author=Tommy Gillespie|access-date=August 23, 2025}}</ref> He also signed a development deal with [Red Arrow Studios International](/source/Red_Arrow_Studios) to create scripted dramas.<ref name="Hollywood_2019_LesleyGoldberg">{{cite news |last=Goldberg |first=Lesley |date=June 13, 2019 |title=James Purefoy to Star in Syrian Civil War Drama for Hulu |url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/james-purefoy-star-syrian-civil-war-drama-hulu-1217909|access-date=November 29, 2020 |work=[Hollywood Reporter](/source/Hollywood_Reporter)}}</ref><ref name="Variety_2020_LeoBarraclough">{{cite news |last=Barraclough |first=Leo |date=November 12, 2020|title=Ron Leshem, Amit Cohen Thriller to Spearhead Anton, WestEnd TV Series Slate |url=https://variety.com/2020/tv/global/ron-leshem-amit-cohen-anton-westend-1234829425/|work=[Variety](/source/Variety_(magazine)) |access-date=November 29, 2020 }}</ref>
