==Early life==
Burman was born in [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia) in 1965 and moved to [Jacksonville](/source/Jacksonville), [Florida](/source/Florida) when he was 12.<ref name=JohnESimmons>{{cite news|title=North Florida Music Hall of Fame|url=http://www.johnesimmons.com/MusicArticles/HOF.html|accessdate=13 June 2018|date=17 May 2007}}</ref>
Between 1986 and 1988, while pursuing Communication Studies at [Florida State University](/source/Florida_State_University) (FSU) in Tallahassee, Burman served as the Concert Director for Student Campus Entertainment (SCE) where he booked bands for the campus nightclub, The Club Down Under, The Metro Night Club,<ref name="CelebrityAccess">{{cite news |date=25 August 2006 |title=Industry Profile: Ron Burman |url=http://members.celebrityaccess.com/news/profile.html?id=316 |accessdate=13 June 2018}}</ref> as well as working at FSU's college radio station [WVFS](/source/WVFS) in Tallahassee.<ref name=JohnESimmons/> While head of SCE, Burman booked hundreds of bands, including the [Red Hot Chili Peppers](/source/Red_Hot_Chili_Peppers), [The Ramones](/source/The_Ramones), [Jello Biafra](/source/Jello_Biafra), [Alpha Blondy](/source/Alpha_Blondy), [The Flaming Lips](/source/The_Flaming_Lips), [Sonic Youth](/source/Sonic_Youth), [Dinosaur Jr.](/source/Dinosaur_Jr.), [Love Tractor](/source/Love_Tractor), and many others.

While still a student, he also completed a summer internship at Bulging Eye Booking & Management in Norman, Oklahoma,<ref name=JohnESimmons/> who managed and booked bands including The Flaming Lips, [Mudhoney](/source/Mudhoney), [the Afghan Whigs](/source/the_Afghan_Whigs) and [Alice Donut](/source/Alice_Donut), whom Burman would go on to manage for several years. ==Career Beginnings==
Burman moved to [New York City](/source/New_York_City) in 1988 to work for Associated Booking Corporation (ABC Booking), where he booked [Anita Baker](/source/Anita_Baker), [B.B. King](/source/B.B._King), [Black Uhuru](/source/Black_Uhuru), [Dr. John](/source/Dr._John), [The Wailers Band](/source/The_Wailers_Band), [Third World](/source/Third_World_(band)), and [Yellowman](/source/Yellowman), among others.   among others. In 1991, he founded Stretch Management, which lasted until 1996. Following Stretch Management's closure, Burman became the showcase manager/festival booker for the [CMJ Music Marathon](/source/CMJ_Music_Marathon) in 1996 and 1997, booking over 1,000 bands into 60 New York venues, including giving [Limp Bizkit](/source/Limp_Bizkit) and [Rammstein](/source/Rammstein) their first shows in New York City.<ref name=CelebrityAccess/>

==Roadrunner A&R==
In 1997, Burman was hired by independent metal label [Roadrunner Records](/source/Roadrunner_Records) which was beginning to expand from metal to more commercial mainstream and alternative rock. Less than two years into his career at Roadrunner, as a junior A&R executive, Burman was tipped off to two self-released albums by [Vancouver](/source/Vancouver) band [Nickelback](/source/Nickelback): ''[Curb](/source/Curb_(album))'' and ''[The State](/source/The_State_(album))''.<ref name=CelebrityAccess/>

Persuading the label to let him fly to Vancouver, Burman was impressed by the fans waiting outside the club in the rain, and the band's performance of “[Leader of Men](/source/Leader_of_Men)” from ''The State''.<ref name=CelebrityAccess/>  After three months of back and forth within the label, Roadrunner signed the group and re-issued the album, followed by ''[Silver Side Up](/source/Silver_Side_Up)'' (2001) with its international hit, “[How You Remind Me](/source/How_You_Remind_Me).” Burman went on to A&R a further five records for the band<ref name=AllMusic>{{cite news|title=Ron Burman Credits|url=https://www.allmusic.com/artist/ron-burman-mn0001967204/credits}}</ref> that would go on to sell over 50 million albums internationally.<ref name="Billboard">{{cite news |date=3 August 2017 |title=Nickelback Reaffirms Commitment to UTA |url=https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/7889815/nickelback-reaffirms-commitment-to-uta-toronto-ceo-ralph-james |accessdate=13 June 2018}}</ref> After the success of Nickelback, Burman was promoted to Senior Vice-president of A&R.<ref name=JohnESimmons/>

Burman also signed the Vancouver quartet [Theory of a Deadman](/source/Theory_of_a_Deadman),<ref name=SonicScoop/> protégés of Nickelback singer [Chad Kroeger](/source/Chad_Kroeger), who co-produced them through his own production company, [604 Records](/source/604_Records), together with [Joey Moi](/source/Joey_Moi).
