# Ron Broglio

**Ron Broglio** (born 1966) is an American academic who is a [Professor](/source/Professor) in the Department of English at [Arizona State University](/source/Arizona_State_University). His research addresses [animal studies](/source/Animal_studies), [environmental humanities](/source/Environmental_humanities), [art history](/source/Art_history), [museum studies](/source/Museum_studies), [British literature](/source/British_literature), and [romanticism](/source/Romanticism).

## Career

Broglio read for a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in English and philosophy at the St. Meinrad College (a now-closed division of [Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology](/source/Saint_Meinrad_Seminary_and_School_of_Theology)) graduating in 1988. He then undertook postgraduate work in [world religions](/source/World_religions) at [Loyola University New Orleans](/source/Loyola_University_New_Orleans) (1989–91) and in [British literature](/source/British_literature) at [Boston College](/source/Boston_College) ([Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts), graduating 1993). He undertook a [PhD](/source/PhD) in [romanticism](/source/Romanticism) and [literary theory](/source/Literary_theory) at the [University of Florida](/source/University_of_Florida), graduating in 1999.[1] His thesis was entitled *Romantic Transformation: Visions of Difference in Blake and Wordsworth*, and his [committee](/source/Thesis_committee) included [Donald Ault](/source/Donald_Ault), John Leavey, John Murchek, and Gayle Zachmann.[2] While undertaking postgraduate study, Broglio taught at both Boston College and the University of Florida.[1]

After completing his postgraduate studies, held an [adjunct](/source/Adjunct_professor) position at the [University of Alabama](/source/University_of_Alabama) (1999-2000) and then a [postdoctoral research position](/source/Postdoctoral_fellowship) at the [Georgia Institute of Technology](/source/Georgia_Institute_of_Technology) (2000–02). He took up an [Assistant Professorship](/source/Assistant_Professorship) at Georgia Tech in 2002, where he remained until 2009 (including two years at [Blekinge Institute of Technology](/source/Blekinge_Institute_of_Technology)).[1] His first book, *Technologies of the Picturesque*, was published in 2008.[3] From 2009-10, Broglio took up an [Associate Professorship](/source/Associate_Professorship) at [Georgia Gwinnett College](/source/Georgia_Gwinnett_College) before moving to [Arizona State University](/source/Arizona_State_University) in 2010 as an assistant professor.[1]

Broglio's second book, *Surface Encounters*, was published in 2011.[4] In 2012, Broglio was promoted to associate professor.[1] He published his third book, *Beasts of Burden: Biopolitics, Labor, and Animal Life in British Romanticism* in 2017,[5] and was promoted to [Full Professor](/source/Full_Professor) in 2018.[1] His fourth book, *Animal Revolution*, was published in 2022. It featured illustrations by [Marina Zurkow](/source/Marina_Zurkow) and an afterword by [Eugene Thacker](/source/Eugene_Thacker).[6]
