# Rollo Pain

[Lieutenant-General](/source/Lieutenant_general_(United_Kingdom)) **Sir Horace Rollo Squarey Pain**, (11 May 1921 – 14 April 2005) was a [British Army](/source/British_Army) officer who commanded the [2nd Division](/source/2nd_Infantry_Division_(United_Kingdom)) from 1970 to 1972.[1]

## Military career

Educated at [Clifton College](/source/Clifton_College),[2] Pain was [commissioned](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) into the [Royal Armoured Corps](/source/Royal_Armoured_Corps) in 1943 during the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War) and served in North West Europe.[3] He was awarded the [Military Cross](/source/Military_Cross) for his leadership during fighting for control of the village of [Stemmen](/source/Stemmen) in Germany.[3]

After the war Pain saw active service in [Palestine](/source/Palestine_(region)) during the [Palestine Emergency](/source/Jewish_insurgency_in_Mandatory_Palestine), for which he was [mentioned in despatches](/source/Mentioned_in_despatches).[3] In 1962 he became [commanding officer](/source/Commanding_officer) of the [4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards](/source/4th/7th_Royal_Dragoon_Guards).[3] He was appointed commander of the [5th Infantry Brigade](/source/5th_Infantry_Brigade_(United_Kingdom)) in North [Borneo](/source/Borneo) in 1965, Assistant Chief of Staff, Operations at the [Ministry of Defence](/source/Ministry_of_Defence_(United_Kingdom)) in 1969 and [General Officer Commanding](/source/General_Officer_Commanding) (GOC) of the [2nd Division](/source/2nd_Infantry_Division_(United_Kingdom)) in 1970.[4] He went on to be Director of Military Training in 1972 and Head of the [British Defence Staff](/source/British_Defence_Staff_%E2%80%93_US) in [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington,_D.C.) in 1975 before retiring in 1978.[3]

Pain was given the colonelcy of the [4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards](/source/4th/7th_Royal_Dragoon_Guards) from 1979 to 1983.[5]

## Family

In 1950 Pain married Denys Chaine-Nickson; they had a son and two daughters.[3]
