# Rollingergrund

**Rollingergrund** (ˈʁɔlɪŋɐˌɡʁʊnt; Luxembourgish: *Rollengergronn*, ˌʀoleŋɐˈɡʀon) is an area of north-western [Luxembourg City](/source/Luxembourg_City), in southern [Luxembourg](/source/Luxembourg). It forms the majority of the [quarter](/source/Quarters_of_Luxembourg_City) of [Rollingergrund-North Belair](/source/Rollingergrund-North_Belair).

Rollingergrund developed around the porcelain factory of [Villeroy & Boch](/source/Villeroy_%26_Boch).[1] While it originally belonged to Luxembourg City, after the territorial reorganisation under the French regime (1795-1814) it was part of the commune of [Eich](/source/Eich,_Luxembourg).[1] After it received its own parish in 1843, the population sought political autonomy, and it became a commune in the [canton](/source/Cantons_of_Luxembourg) of [Luxembourg](/source/Luxembourg_(canton)) from 8 May 1849, when it was split from the commune of [Eich](/source/Eich,_Luxembourg).[2][1] On 26 March 1920 it was again merged into the [city](/source/List_of_cities_in_Luxembourg) of Luxembourg, along with Eich, [Hamm](/source/Hamm,_Luxembourg) and [Hollerich](/source/Hollerich).[3]

[Michel Engels](/source/Michel_Engels) (1851–1901), the celebrated illustrator, author and art teacher, was born in Rollingergrund.[4]
