== Life ==
Born in [Bochum](/source/Bochum), Hermann studied at the [University of Freiburg](/source/University_of_Freiburg), the [Hochschule für Musik Mainz](/source/Hochschule_f%C3%BCr_Musik_Mainz) and the [Musikhochschule Frankfurt](/source/Musikhochschule_Frankfurt). He completed his vocal training with Margarete von Winterfeldt, Paul Lohmann and Flaminio Contini. In 1961 he was awarded third prize in the [ARD International Music Competition](/source/ARD_International_Music_Competition).<ref name="Kutsch/Riemens" /><ref>{{Ill|Pipers Enzyklopädie des Musiktheaters|de}}, Index volume.</ref>

Hermann made his opera debut as Count Almaviva in Mozart's ''[Le nozze di Figaro](/source/Le_nozze_di_Figaro)'' at the [Theater Trier](/source/Theater_Trier) in 1967.<ref name="Kutsch/Riemens" /> He became a member of the ensemble of the [Opernhaus Zürich](/source/Opernhaus_Z%C3%BCrich) in 1968, with guest contracts to the [Bavarian State Opera](/source/Bavarian_State_Opera) in Munich and the [Cologne Opera](/source/Cologne_Opera). He appeared at the [Teatro Colón](/source/Teatro_Col%C3%B3n) in Buenos Aires as Jochanaan in ''[Salome](/source/Salome_(opera))'' by Richard Strauss in 1974, as Pollux in Rameau's ''[Castor et Pollux](/source/Castor_et_Pollux)'' at the [Oper Frankfurt](/source/Oper_Frankfurt) in 1980, as Golaud in Debussy's [Pelléas et Mélisande](/source/Pell%C3%A9as_et_M%C3%A9lisande_(opera)) at [La Scala](/source/La_Scala) in Milan in 1986, and appeared also in Paris and Berlin, among others. In addition to the usual leading baritone roles – the title role in Mozart's ''[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)'', Wolfram in Wagner's ''[Tannhäuser](/source/Tannh%C3%A4user_(opera))'', Germont in Verdi's ''[La traviata](/source/La_traviata)'' and Amfortas in Wagner's ''[Parsifal](/source/Parsifal)'' – he sang in rarely performed works, including the title role in Marschner's ''[Der Vampyr](/source/Der_Vampyr)'' and Busoni's ''[Doktor Faust](/source/Doktor_Faust)'', Schumann's ''[Genoveva](/source/Genoveva)'', Moses in Schönberg's ''[Moses und Aron](/source/Moses_und_Aron)'', and in Werner Egk's ''[Peer Gynt](/source/Peer_Gynt_(opera))''.
