# Roland Chassain

**Roland Chassain** (5 February 1947 – 9 February 2021) was a French politician.[1]

## Biography

Chassain served as [Deputy](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(France)) for [Bouches-du-Rhône's 16th constituency](/source/Bouches-du-Rh%C3%B4ne's_16th_constituency) in the [12th legislature of the Fifth French Republic](/source/XIIe_l%C3%A9gislature_de_la_Cinqui%C3%A8me_R%C3%A9publique_fran%C3%A7aise) as a member of the [Union for a Popular Movement](/source/Union_for_a_Popular_Movement). As a member of the [National Assembly](/source/National_Assembly_(France)), he fought for the reestablishment of the [death penalty](/source/Capital_punishment_in_France) for acts of terrorism.[2] However, the [Constitution of France](/source/Constitution_of_France) was rewritten in 2007 to eliminate the death penalty. That year, he was defeated by [Michel Vauzelle](/source/Michel_Vauzelle) of the [Socialist Party](/source/Socialist_Party_(France)).

Chassain ran again in [2012](/source/2012_French_legislative_election), but withdrew in favor of the [National Front](/source/National_Rally) candidate and rallying voters against Michel Vauzelle, though Vauzelle retained the seat.[3]

During the [2012 Union for a Popular Movement leadership election](/source/2012_Union_for_a_Popular_Movement_leadership_election), Chassain supported [Jean-François Copé](/source/Jean-Fran%C3%A7ois_Cop%C3%A9) to be leader of the party. Following a contested election, he called for [Nicolas Sarkozy](/source/Nicolas_Sarkozy) to be President of the UMP, and for Copé and [François Fillon](/source/Fran%C3%A7ois_Fillon) to be co-presidents.[4] In a December 2012 interview with *[Minute](/source/Minute_(newspaper))*, Chassain called for more unity between the UMP and the National Front.[5]

Roland Chassain died on 9 February 2021 at the age of 74, four days after his birthday.[6]
