Pickering, born in [Birmingham](/source/Birmingham), was educated at [Whitcliffe Mount School](/source/Whitcliffe_Mount_School) in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, which also produced England centre [Jeff Butterfield](/source/Jeff_Butterfield). Capped six times by [England](/source/England_national_rugby_union_team), Pickering debuted in the [1967 Five Nations](/source/1967_Five_Nations_Championship). His first England cap was meant to come against the touring Wallabies in 1967, but after being named in the XV he had to withdraw at the last minute due to pharyngitis.
