**Roger Ashton-Griffiths** (born 19 January 1957) is an English [character actor](/source/Character_actor), screenwriter and film director.[1] He is best known for his role as [Mace Tyrell](/source/List_of_A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire_characters#Mace_Tyrell) in the [HBO](/source/HBO) fantasy series *[Game of Thrones](/source/Game_of_Thrones)*.

## Life and career

Born in [Hertfordshire](/source/Hertfordshire), Ashton-Griffiths attended [Altrincham Grammar School for Boys](/source/Altrincham_Grammar_School_for_Boys) in [Manchester](/source/Manchester). He then read music at [Lancaster University](/source/Lancaster_University), where he was a member of [Furness College](/source/Furness_College%2C_Lancaster), graduating in 1978.[2] He began his career as a singer with the [English National Opera](/source/English_National_Opera) at the [London Coliseum](/source/London_Coliseum) between 1979 and 1981.

## Personal life

Ashton-Griffiths is married to Sharmini Thillaimuthu, a senior studio director at the BBC, with whom he has two children. He lives in [Suffolk](/source/Suffolk), and has dual [British](/source/British_nationality_law) and [Canadian citizenship](/source/Canadian_nationality_law).

In 2003, Ashton-Griffiths attained an [MA](/source/Master_of_Arts) in fine art from the [University of East London](/source/University_of_East_London), and in 2016, he attained a [PhD](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) in creative writing from the [University of East Anglia](/source/University_of_East_Anglia).[4] In 2010, he was appointed a Fellow of [Furness College, Lancaster](/source/Furness_College%2C_Lancaster).
