'''Rodrigo Álvaro Tello Valenzuela''' (born 14 October 1979) is a Chilean former professional [footballer](/source/association_football). He operated mainly as a [left midfielder](/source/Midfielder), but could also appear in [the middle](/source/Midfielder) and as an attacking [left back](/source/left_back).

He spent the better part of his early professional career in Portugal with [Sporting](/source/Sporting_Clube_de_Portugal), where he arrived at only 21. In 2007, he moved to Turkey where he remained several years, notably representing [Beşiktaş](/source/Be%C5%9Fikta%C5%9F_J.K.) and [Eskişehirspor](/source/Eski%C5%9Fehirspor).

A [Chilean international](/source/Chile_national_football_team) for a full decade, Tello represented the country at the [Olympic Bronze Medalist in Sydney 2000](/source/Olympic_Bronze_Medalist_in_Sydney_2000), [2010 World Cup](/source/2010_FIFA_World_Cup) and the [2007 Copa América](/source/2007_Copa_Am%C3%A9rica), He is currently a player representative at RC Sports Management.

==Club career==
Born in [Santiago](/source/Santiago), as a child Tello was with [Colo-Colo](/source/Colo-Colo) from 1992 to 1995.<ref>{{cite web |title=Rodrigo Tello reveló detalles de su desconocido paso por Colo Colo |url=https://www.encancha.cl/futbol-chileno/2020/7/30/rodrigo-tello-revelo-detalles-de-su-desconocido-paso-por-colo-colo-48632.html |website=www.encancha.cl |access-date=19 July 2022 |language=es |date=30 July 2020}}</ref> Next he moved to [Club Universidad de Chile](/source/Club_Universidad_de_Chile) and began his career making his professional debuts in 1999. He quickly made a good impression, being named the best midfielder in the country in 2000 and being transferred to [Sporting Clube de Portugal](/source/Sporting_Clube_de_Portugal) for a fee of [€](/source/Euro)7 million in January of the following year, alongside compatriot [Mario Cáceres](/source/Mario_C%C3%A1ceres); at the time, it was a club record for the [Primeira Liga](/source/Primeira_Liga) side.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Sporting/interior.aspx?content_id=63532|title=Luz-verde para Rodrigo Tello|trans-title=Green light to Rodrigo Tello|publisher=[Record](/source/Record_(Portuguese_newspaper))|language=pt|date=4 January 2001|access-date=24 April 2014}}</ref>

After a slow start, Tello eventually became an important first-team member – although he would be used mainly as a [substitute](/source/Substitute_(association_football)) – and even saw some time at [left back](/source/left_back).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Sporting/interior.aspx?content_id=91187|title=O "novo" Tello e o "velhos" Pintos|trans-title="New" Tello and "old" Pintos|publisher=Record|language=pt|date=5 July 2001|access-date=24 April 2014}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Sporting/interior.aspx?content_id=156558|title=Rui Jorge na calha para render Tello|trans-title=Rui Jorge poised to replace Tello|publisher=Record|language=pt|date=6 April 2003|access-date=24 April 2014}}</ref>

In the 2007 summer, Tello moved to Turkey and signed with [Beşiktaş](/source/Be%C5%9Fikta%C5%9F_J.K.), being named to the ''Team of the Season'' in [his second year](/source/2008%E2%80%9309_S%C3%BCper_Lig) as his team won [the double](/source/Double_(association_football)). On 25 November 2009, during a [UEFA Champions League](/source/UEFA_Champions_League) group stage game against [Manchester United](/source/Manchester_United_F.C.), he scored from 25 yards to beat [Ben Foster](/source/Ben_Foster_(footballer)) and help to a [1–0 win](/source/2009%E2%80%9310_UEFA_Champions_League), the first match in that stage of the competition the English had lost at [Old Trafford](/source/Old_Trafford) in eight years.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/01df-0e736325209f-f12f6dd7b413-1000--besiktas-triumph-at-old-trafford/|title=Beşiktaş triumph at Old Trafford|publisher=UEFA|date=25 November 2009|access-date=18 November 2015}}</ref>

On 25 July 2010, aged 30, Tello left Beşiktaş but continued in the [Süper Lig](/source/S%C3%BCper_Lig), signing a three-year contract with [Eskişehirspor](/source/Eski%C5%9Fehirspor). In January 2014, he moved to fellow league club [Elazığspor](/source/Elaz%C4%B1%C4%9Fspor), transferring to [Şanlıurfaspor](/source/%C5%9Eanl%C4%B1urfaspor) of the [second division](/source/TFF_First_League) in June.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.goal.com/tr/news/453/transfer-dosyas%C4%B1/2014/06/23/4908180/rodrigo-tello-%C5%9Fanl%C4%B1urfasporla-anla%C5%9Ft%C4%B1|title=Rodrigo Tello Şanlıurfaspor'la anlaştı|trans-title=Rodrigo Tello agrees terms with Şanlıurfaspor|website=Goal.com|language=tr|date=23 June 2014|access-date=23 February 2016}}</ref>
