Born in [New Haven, Connecticut](/source/New_Haven%2C_Connecticut), Beach was the son of a lawyer and attended [Yale Law School](/source/Yale_Law_School), which he graduated from in 1889. Beach was active in tennis during his youth and won an unofficial mixed doubles title at the [1890 U.S. National Championships](/source/1890_U.S._National_Championships_(tennis)), partnering [Mabel Cahill](/source/Mabel_Cahill). During the [Spanish–American War](/source/Spanish%E2%80%93American_War),  Beach was posted to Puerto Rico with the 1st United States Volunteer Engineers to serve as a First Lieutenant and Adjutant.
