'fame, glory' + **[ríks](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/r%C4%ABks)*, 'king, ruler') is a [Germanic name](/source/Germanic_name), recorded from the 8th century onward.[1] Its [Old High German](/source/Old_High_German) forms are *Hrodric*, *Chrodericus*, *Hroderich*, *Roderich*, *Ruodrich*, etc.; in [Gothic language](/source/Gothic_language) *Hrōþireiks*; in [Old English language](/source/Old_English_language) it appears as *Hrēðrīc* or *Hroðrīc*, and in [Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse) as *Hrǿríkʀ* ([Old East Norse](/source/Old_East_Norse) *Hrø̄rīkʀ*, *Rø̄rīkʀ*, [Old West Norse](/source/Old_West_Norse) as *Hrœrekr*, *Rœrekr*).

In the 12th-century *[Primary Chronicle](/source/Primary_Chronicle)*, the name is reflected as Рюрикъ, i.e. *[Rurik](/source/Rurik_(given_name))*. In [Spanish](/source/Spanish_language) and [Portuguese](/source/Portuguese_language), it was rendered as *[Rodrigo](/source/Rodrigo)*, or in its short form, *Ruy or Rui*, and in [Galician](/source/Galician_language), the name is *Roy* or *Roi*. The [Middle English](/source/Middle_English) given name had also virtually disappeared by the 19th century, even though it had survived as a surname. The given name was re-popularised by [Sir Walter Scott](/source/Sir_Walter_Scott)'s poem *[The Vision of Don Roderick](/source/The_Vision_of_Don_Roderick)* (1811), where *Roderick* refers to the [Visigothic king](/source/Roderic). The modern English name is sometimes abbreviated to [Roddy](/source/Roddy).

*Roderick* is also an [Anglicisation](/source/Anglicisation) of several unrelated names. As a surname and given name it is used as an anglicised form of the [Welsh](/source/Welsh_language) *[Rhydderch](/source/Rhydderch_(disambiguation))*. The given name *Roderick* is also used as an anglicised form of the [Gaelic](/source/Gaelic_languages) personal name [Rory](/source/Rory) ([Irish](/source/Irish_language): *Ruaidhrí*, *Ruairí*; [Scottish Gaelic](/source/Scottish_Gaelic_language): *Ruairidh*, *Ruaraidh*).
