Guiney first played hurling to a high standard as a student at [St Peter's College](/source/St_Peter's_College%2C_Wexford) in [Wexford](/source/Wexford). Guiney's twin brother, [Dave Guiney](/source/Dave_Guiney), was also a member of Wexford's All-Ireland-winning team in 1996.
