Rock art

Rock carvings of [Engelstrup](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Engelstrupstenen&action=edit&redlink=1) and Herrestrup

Madsebakke on Bornholm

**Rock art in Denmark** ([Danish](/source/Danish_language): *Helleristninger or Halristinger*) differs significantly from that of the [Scandinavian Peninsula](/source/Scandinavian_Peninsula). Carvings are smaller, focused on agriculture ([Danish](/source/Danish_language): *Jordbruksristninger*), rarely figural. Some examples are engraved on [megaliths](/source/Megalith) or [cists](/source/Cist), but most on small [glacial erratics](/source/Glacial_erratic). Many of these have been placed in museums or incorporated into churches (Asnæs near [Kalundborg](/source/Kalundborg), Såby near [Roskilde](/source/Roskilde), Sigersted near [Ringsted](/source/Ringsted) - all in [Zealand](/source/Zealand) - and Taps in [Kolding](/source/Kolding)). A few have been left *in situ*, like the two stones at [Mandbjerghøj](/source/Mandbjergh%C3%B8j).

The repertoire of images of these carvings includes raised hands, [Footprints](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Footprints_(rock_carving)&action=edit&redlink=1) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fu%C3%9Fsohle_(Felsritzung))] (individuals and pairs), wheels, [sun crosses](/source/Sun_cross), and spirals, as well as ships. In addition to these, there are also some abstract or unclear images. The majority of the images are associated with [cup and ring marks](/source/Cup_and_ring_mark).

## Bornholm

On [Bornholm](/source/Bornholm), which in prehistoric times belonged more to the [Swedish](/source/Sweden) cultural sphere, there are numerous large carvings on cliff faces - mostly of ships. Denmark's largest complex of rock art is at [Madsebakke](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rock_art_of_Allinge-Sandvig&action=edit&redlink=1) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felsritzungen_(Allinge-Sandvig))] in [Allinge-Gudhjem](/source/Allinge-Gudhjem). There are also noteworthy [petroglyphs](/source/Petroglyph) at Blåholt, [Lille Strandbygård](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rock_art_of_Lille_Strandbyg%C3%A5rd&action=edit&redlink=1) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felsritzungen_von_Lille_Strandbyg%C3%A5rd)], and Storløkkebakken.
