# Roccellina

***Roccellina*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [lichen](/source/Lichen)-forming [fungi](/source/Fungi) in the family [Roccellaceae](/source/Roccellaceae).[1]

## Taxonomy

The genus was [circumscribed](/source/Circumscription_(taxonomy)) in 1898 by British botanist [Otto Vernon Darbishire](/source/Otto_Vernon_Darbishire) with *[Roccellina condensata](/source/Roccellina_condensata)* as the [type](/source/Type_species). At that time, only species.[2] A year earlier, Darbishire published the genus *Roccellaria* to contain the species *Roccellaria intricata*. More than a century later, [molecular phylogenetic](/source/Molecular_phylogenetic) analysis showed that this species is nested in the [polyphyletic](/source/Polyphyletic) genus *Roccellina*. Because *Roccellaria* was published earlier than *Roccellina*, the name *Roccellaria* has [priority](/source/Principle_of_Priority), threatening to disrupt the nomenclature of all the *Roccellina* species. To avoid this nomenclatural instability, Swedish botanist Anders Tehler made a proposal to [formally conserve](/source/Conserved_name) the name *Roccellina* over *Roccellaria*;[3] the proposal was later accepted by the [Nomenclature Committee for Fungi](/source/Nomenclature_Committee_for_Fungi) in 2010.[4]
