# Robin Fitton

**Edwin Robin Fitton** (5 April 1928 - 2 May 1970) was a British professional [motorcycle racer](/source/Motorcycle_racing). He competed in [Grand Prix motorcycle racing](/source/Grand_Prix_motorcycle_racing) from 1964 to 1969.[1]

Fitton was born in [Leeds](/source/Leeds), England, on April 5, 1928, and attended school at [Aireborough](/source/Aireborough), just north of Leeds.[1] At the age of 16 he acquired his first motorcycle, a [BSA Sloper](/source/BSA_Sloper).[1] He began competing in motorcycle [trials](/source/Observed_trials) until a visit to [Cadwell Park](/source/Cadwell_Park) convinced him to beging competing in [road racing](/source/Road_racing).[1] He studied civil engineering at [University of Bradford](/source/University_of_Bradford).[1] By 1947, he was racing a 1931 [Montgomery](/source/Montgomery_Motorcycles)-[JAP](/source/J._A._Prestwich_Industries) at Cadwell Park.[1] He also competed in [grasstrack](/source/Grasstrack) competitions.[1]

His best season was in [1968](/source/1968_Grand_Prix_motorcycle_racing_season) when he finished the year in fourth place in the 500cc world championship.[2] Fitton was killed at the [Nürburgring](/source/N%C3%BCrburgring) during practice for the [1970](/source/1970_Grand_Prix_motorcycle_racing_season) [West German Grand Prix](/source/German_motorcycle_Grand_Prix).[3][4]
