**Sir Ralph Ellis "Robin" Brook** [CMG](/source/Companion_of_the_Order_of_St_Michael_and_St_George) [OBE](/source/Officer_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) (19 June 1908 – 25 October 1998)[1] was a British merchant banker and a director of the [Bank of England](/source/Bank_of_England). His wife [Helen Brook](/source/Helen_Brook) was founder of the [Brook Advisory Centres](/source/Brook_Advisory_Centres).[1]

As a [fencer](/source/Fencing), he competed at the [1936](/source/1936_Summer_Olympics) and [1948 Summer Olympics](/source/1948_Summer_Olympics).[2] In 1936, he won the [sabre](/source/Sabre_(fencing)) title at the [British Fencing Championships](/source/British_Fencing_Championships).[3]

The son of a surgeon, Brook was educated, through scholarships, at [Eton College](/source/Eton_College) and subsequently at [King's College, Cambridge](/source/King's_College%2C_Cambridge), where he studied under [Maynard Keynes](/source/Maynard_Keynes), earning a [double first](/source/Double_first) in Economics.[1]

## Honours

Brook was appointed an [Officer of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Officer_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) (OBE) on 2 August 1945,[4] and a [Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George](/source/Companion_of_the_Order_of_St_Michael_and_St_George) (CMG) in the [1954 New Year Honours](/source/1954_New_Year_Honours).[5]

He was [knighted](/source/Knight_Bachelor) in the [1974 New Year Honours](/source/1974_New_Year_Honours) for services to export, in his role as President of the [Association of British Chambers of Commerce](/source/British_Chambers_of_Commerce).[6]
