**Roberto Mussi** (Italian pronunciation: [\[roˈbɛrto ˈmussi\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Italian); born 25 August 1963) is an Italian former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football), who played as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)); a versatile player, he was capable of playing both as a [centre-back](/source/Defender_(association_football)#Centre-back) or [right-back](/source/Defender_(association_football)#Full-back). Due to his dynamism, tenacity, work-rate, and technique, he was capable of helping his team both offensively and defensively as a fullback on the [flank](/source/Midfielder#Winger). At international level, he represented [Italy](/source/Italy_national_football_team) at the [1994 FIFA World Cup](/source/1994_FIFA_World_Cup), where they reached the [final](/source/1994_FIFA_World_Cup_final), and at [UEFA Euro 1996](/source/UEFA_Euro_1996). Following his retirement, he worked as a [manager](/source/Association_football_manager).[1]

## Club career

Throughout his career, Mussi played for several Italian clubs. He made his professional debut with [Massese](/source/US_Massese_1919) (1981–84), and helped the team to gain promotion to [Serie C2](/source/Serie_C2). He subsequently moved to [Parma](/source/Parma_AC) in 1984, where he enjoyed a successful spell under manager [Arrigo Sacchi](/source/Arrigo_Sacchi) in [Serie C1](/source/Serie_C1), helping the club to a [Serie B](/source/Serie_B) promotion by winning the Serie C title.[1]

In 1987, Sacchi purchased his former young [fullback](/source/Defender_(association_football)#Full-back), making him part of his legendary [Milan](/source/AC_Milan) side. Mussi spent two seasons with the club (1987–89), winning an Italian [Serie A](/source/Serie_A) title and a [Supercoppa Italiana](/source/1988_Supercoppa_Italiana) in [1988](/source/1987%E2%80%9388_Serie_A), as well as one [European Cup](/source/European_Cup) (the predecessor to the [UEFA Champions League](/source/UEFA_Champions_League)) in [1989](/source/1988%E2%80%9389_European_Cup) with the club.[1]

He subsequently moved to [Serie B](/source/Serie_B) side [Torino](/source/Torino_FC) in [1989](/source/1989%E2%80%9390_Serie_B), helping the team to win the Serie B title that season, and to earn promotion to [Serie A](/source/Serie_A). The [following season](/source/1990%E2%80%9391_Serie_A), he won the 1991 edition of the [Mitropa Cup](/source/Mitropa_Cup) with Torino, and he helped his club to qualify for the [UEFA Cup](/source/UEFA_Cup) the next season by finishing the Serie A season in fifth place. During the [1991–92 season](/source/1991%E2%80%9392_Serie_A), Mussi led Torino to a third-place finish in Serie A, and he also helped his club to reach the [UEFA Cup final](/source/1991%E2%80%9392_UEFA_Cup), where they were defeated by [Ajax](/source/Ajax_F.C.) on [aggregate](/source/1992_UEFA_Cup_final). During the [1992–93 season](/source/1992%E2%80%9393_Serie_A), Mussi won the [Coppa Italia](/source/1992%E2%80%9393_Coppa_Italia) with Torino, but the team missed out on the [1993 Supercoppa Italiana](/source/1993_Supercoppa_Italiana).[1]

In 1994, Mussi returned to Parma, where he enjoyed great success. In his second spell with the Emilian club, he won the [UEFA Cup](/source/UEFA_Cup) twice (in [1995](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_UEFA_Cup) and [1999](/source/1998%E2%80%9399_UEFA_Cup)), and one [Coppa Italia](/source/Coppa_Italia) in [1999](/source/1998%E2%80%9399_Coppa_Italia); he also reached the [Coppa Italia final in 1995](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_Coppa_Italia), and he managed a third-place finish in Serie A in [1995](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_Serie_A), a second-place league finish in [1997](/source/1996%E2%80%9397_Serie_A), and a fourth-place finish in [1999](/source/1998%E2%80%9399_Serie_A) with Parma. He retired from football in 1999, but he briefly returned to Massese, the club with which he had made his debut, during the 2010–11 season, in the lower divisions, although he failed to make an appearance for the club during the season. Overall, Mussi played 250 matches in Serie A throughout his career.[1][2]

## International career

At international level, Mussi won 11 caps for the [Italy national football team](/source/Italy_national_football_team) between 1993 and 1996 under manager Sacchi. He participated at the [1994 FIFA World Cup](/source/1994_FIFA_World_Cup) with Italy, where they reached the [final](/source/1994_FIFA_World_Cup_Final), only to lose to [Brazil](/source/Brazil_national_football_team) on penalties. He made 3 appearances during the tournament, including one in the final defeat, picking up an injury during the match; he was replaced by [Luigi Apolloni](/source/Luigi_Apolloni). He also notably set up [Roberto Baggio](/source/Roberto_Baggio)'s last minute equaliser against [Nigeria](/source/Nigeria_national_football_team) in the round of 16, which enabled the Italians to win the match in extra-time with a Baggio penalty and advance to the quarter-finals.[3][4][5] He also took part at [Euro 1996](/source/1996_UEFA_European_Football_Championship), making 3 appearances as Italy were eliminated in the group stage.[6]
