**Roberta Jymme Schourup** (born April 7, 1943) better known as **Roberta Shore**, is an American actress and performer. She is notable for her roles in the original *[Shaggy Dog](/source/The_Shaggy_Dog_(1959_film))* film and as Betsy Garth on the Western television series *[The Virginian](/source/The_Virginian_(TV_series))*. A devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shore broke her contract to focus on her marriage and family, retiring at the age of 22. She lives in Utah.[1]

## Career

Shore co-starred in several [Walt Disney](/source/Walt_Disney) productions featuring the [Mouseketeers](/source/Mouseketeer), thus came to be associated with them. (She auditioned as a Mouseketeer, but was turned down because she was taller than most of the cast at the time.) She appeared as [Annette Funicello](/source/Annette_Funicello)'s rival Laura Rogan in [Annette's self-titled series](/source/Walt_Disney_Presents%3A_Annette) and as French-speaking Franceska in *[The Shaggy Dog](/source/The_Shaggy_Dog_(1959_film))* (1959).[2] In 1964, she voiced a Swiss yodeler for the attraction ["it's a small world"](/source/It's_a_Small_World).[3]

Aside from Disney, Shore had a featured role in the 1959 screen version of *[Blue Denim](/source/Blue_Denim)*, duetting with [Warren Berlinger](/source/Warren_Berlinger), and an uncredited [cameo appearance](/source/Cameo_appearance) in *[A Summer Place](/source/A_Summer_Place_(film))* as [Sandra Dee](/source/Sandra_Dee)'s gossipy schoolmate Anne Talbert. Later, she played Ricky Summers in the 1960 movie *[Because They're Young](/source/Because_They're_Young)*, Jenny Bell in *[The Young Savages](/source/The_Young_Savages)* (1961), and in an uncredited role as Lorna in [Stanley Kubrick](/source/Stanley_Kubrick)'s 1962 version of *[Lolita](/source/Lolita_(1962_film))*.[2]

Shore's television credits include appearances on *[Playhouse 90](/source/Playhouse_90)*, *[The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet](/source/The_Adventures_of_Ozzie_and_Harriet)*, *[The Donna Reed Show](/source/The_Donna_Reed_Show)*, *[The Lawrence Welk Show](/source/The_Lawrence_Welk_Show)* (a singing appearance in 1959),[4] *[The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis](/source/The_Many_Loves_of_Dobie_Gillis)*, several [Western](/source/Western_(genre)) series including *[Maverick](/source/Maverick_(TV_series))*, *[Wagon Train](/source/Wagon_Train)*, *[The Tall Man](/source/The_Tall_Man_(TV_series))*, *[Laramie](/source/Laramie_(TV_series))*, and *[Lawman](/source/Lawman_(TV_series))*, and regular roles on *[Father Knows Best](/source/Father_Knows_Best)* and *[The New Bob Cummings Show](/source/The_New_Bob_Cummings_Show)*.[2] Most notably, Shore was featured in the first four seasons of *[The Virginian](/source/The_Virginian_(TV_series))* as Betsy Garth, the daughter of Shiloh Ranch owner Judge Garth, played by [Lee J. Cobb](/source/Lee_J._Cobb).[1]

At the age of 22, Shore broke her contract to focus on her marriage and family. Born and raised as a member of the [Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints](/source/The_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints), Shore cites her faith as the primary reason for her decision. After her marriage, Shore and her husband moved to Utah, where she has lived ever since. In 1974, the [Brigham Young University Motion Picture Studio](/source/LDS_Motion_Picture_Studios) invited Shore to star in a short film called *[Cipher in the Snow](/source/Cipher_in_the_Snow)*. To date, it is her final film credit.[2]
