Sayers was elected in 1888 to the [Legislative Assembly of Queensland](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Queensland) as the member for [Charters Towers](/source/Electoral_district_of_Charters_Towers), serving until 1893.<ref name=qp/> In 1906, he was elected to the [Australian Senate](/source/Australian_Senate) as an [Anti-Socialist](/source/Free_Trade_Party) Senator for Queensland, joining the [Commonwealth Liberal Party](/source/Commonwealth_Liberal_Party) in 1909.
