English artist

**Robert Flavell Micklewright** [RWS](/source/Royal_Watercolour_Society) (1923–2013) was a British artist, illustrator and designer. He worked as a [freelancer](/source/Freelancer) and designed [dust jackets](/source/Dust_jacket) for books by [C. P. Snow](/source/C._P._Snow) and [V. S. Naipaul](/source/V._S._Naipaul), and posters for [London Transport](/source/London_Transport_(brand)). According to *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)*, his work was "always of a high standard".[1]

Micklewright was born in [West Bromwich](/source/West_Bromwich), Staffordshire, the son of an illustrator, G. P. Micklewright, and Olive, née Flavell.[2][3][4] He trained at the [Croydon School of Art](/source/Croydon_College) in the late 1930s.[3] In [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he served in the [Rifle Brigade](/source/Rifle_Brigade), seeing action in North Africa, Italy, and Greece. His company commander was the glass engraver [Laurence Whistler](/source/Laurence_Whistler).[2][3]

After the war, Micklewright trained at [Wimbledon School of Art](/source/Wimbledon_College_of_Arts) from 1947 to 1949 and the [Slade School of Fine Art](/source/Slade_School_of_Fine_Art) from 1949 to 1952.[3] The Slade's focus was on [fine art](/source/Fine_art) and, according to Micklewright, "wasn't a lot of use to ordinary mortals like myself".[2]

Micklewright worked freelance and designed dust jackets for book publishers, [Royal Mail](/source/Royal_Mail) [stamp](/source/Postage_stamp) books, illustrations for the *[Radio Times](/source/Radio_Times)*, posters for [London Transport](/source/London_Transport_(brand)), and paintings for companies including [Shell](/source/Shell_plc) and [Gulf Oil](/source/Gulf_Oil).[3] He created at least four posters for London Transport from 1968 to 1977, including *Epping Forest* in 1968, *Kenwood House* in 1975,[5] and *Marble Hill House* in 1977.[6] His 1970 London Transport poster for *Ham House* is in the permanent collection of the [Victoria & Albert Museum](/source/Victoria_%26_Albert_Museum), London.[7]

Micklewright designed book dust jackets for various authors, including [C. P. Snow](/source/C._P._Snow), [David Caute](/source/David_Caute), [Paul Hyde Bonner](/source/Paul_Hyde_Bonner), [Hubert Bagster](/source/Hubert_Bagster), [Malcolm Saville](/source/Malcolm_Saville), and [V. S. Naipaul](/source/V._S._Naipaul).[2] He designed the cover art for Naipaul's first novel, *[The Mystic Masseur](/source/The_Mystic_Masseur_(novel))*, in 1957,[8] and for his second, *[The Suffrage of Elvira](/source/The_Suffrage_of_Elvira)*, in 1958, both for [André Deutsch](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Deutsch).[9]

Micklewright married while a student at the Slade and lived in the hamlet of [Mogador](/source/Mogador%2C_Surrey), Surrey. He died in 2013.[2][3]
