# Robert Keating

**Robert Keating** was an [Irish](/source/Irish_people) politician from [Cashel](/source/Cashel,_County_Tipperary) in [County Tipperary](/source/County_Tipperary).[1][2]

## Biography

He was elected at the [1847 general election](/source/1847_United_Kingdom_general_election) as a [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) (MP) for [County Waterford](/source/County_Waterford_(UK_Parliament_constituency)),[3] as a [Repeal Association](/source/Repeal_Association) candidate.[4] [The Times](/source/The_Times) newspaper of London reported that at the time of his election he was employed by the [Board of Works](/source/Metropolitan_Board_of_Works) a rate of 7s/6d per day, claiming that this proved "beyond a shadow of a doubt" that he was unqualified to be an MP.[5]

He did not defend the seat at the [1852 general election](/source/1852_United_Kingdom_general_election), but stood instead as an Irish [Whig Party](/source/Whigs_(British_political_party)) candidate in [Waterford City](/source/Waterford_City_(UK_Parliament_constituency)). He won that seat,[1] and held it until [1857](/source/1857_United_Kingdom_general_election), when he did not stand again.[4]
