# Robert Clift

Not to be confused with [Robert Clift Jr.](/source/Robert_Clift_Jr.) (1824–1859), an American soldier and early settler in California.

**Robert John Clift** (born 1 August 1962) is a British former [field hockey](/source/Field_hockey) player. He was a member of the [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain_men's_national_field_hockey_team) squad in the [1988](/source/Field_hockey_at_the_1988_Summer_Olympics) Summer Olympics in Seoul where they won a gold medal.[1]

## Biography

Clift was born in [Newport, Wales](/source/Newport,_Wales), and was educated at [Bablake School](/source/Bablake_School) and the [University of Nottingham](/source/University_of_Nottingham).[2]

His preferred position was inside left and in November 1982 he received his first England call up while studying at Nottingham and playing for [Nottingham Hockey Club](/source/Nottingham_Hockey_Club).[3]

Clift signed for [Hounslow Hockey Club](/source/Hounslow_Hockey_Club) for the start of the 1984/85 season. While there he was part of the bronze medal-winning Great Britain team that competed at the [1984 Men's Hockey Champions Trophy](/source/1984_Men's_Hockey_Champions_Trophy), in [Karachi](/source/Karachi), Pakistan and the silver medal-winning team the following year in [Perth](/source/Perth), Australia.[4] He also won silver with the [England](/source/England_men's_national_field_hockey_team) squad at the [1986 Men's Hockey World Cup](/source/1986_Men's_Hockey_World_Cup) in October.[5][6]

Clift moved to [Southgate Hockey Club](/source/Southgate_Hockey_Club) for the 1987/88 season and while at Southgate represented [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain_at_the_1988_Summer_Olympics) at the 1988 Olympic Games in [Seoul](/source/Seoul) and winning a gold medal with the team.[2]

After the Olympics he joined [East Grinstead](/source/East_Grinstead_Hockey_Club) and represented England at the [1990 Men's Hockey World Cup](/source/1990_Men's_Hockey_World_Cup)[7] and captained the [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain_at_the_1992_Summer_Olympics) team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.[2][8]

After the Olympics, Clift joined Tunbridge Wells Hockey Club as their coach.[9]
