Christian was born in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles), United States, and began acting as a child, appearing on ''[Amos 'n' Andy](/source/Amos_'n'_Andy)'' and ''[The Andy Griffith Show](/source/The_Andy_Griffith_Show)''.<ref name="nyt" /> He later moved to New York and studied at the [Actors Studio](/source/Actors_Studio) with [Lee Strasberg](/source/Lee_Strasberg).<ref name="nyt" />

Christian was a member of the [Negro Ensemble Company](/source/Negro_Ensemble_Company) and appeared in numerous stage productions, winning an [Obie Award](/source/Obie_Award) in 1976 for his performance in [Athol Fugard](/source/Athol_Fugard)'s ''[Blood Knot](/source/Blood_Knot)'' at the [Manhattan Theater Club](/source/Manhattan_Theater_Club).<ref name="nyt" /> Christian appeared as Detective Bob Morgan on ''[Another World](/source/Another_World_(TV_series))'' from January to December 1982.<ref>{{cite news |last=Fraser |first=C.
