**Sir Robert William Chote** (born 24 January 1968[2]) is a [British](/source/British_people) [economist](/source/Economist) and president of [Trinity College, Oxford](/source/Trinity_College%2C_Oxford). Previously he was chair of the [UK Statistics Authority](/source/UK_Statistics_Authority)[3][4] and chairman of the [Office of Budget Responsibility](/source/Office_of_Budget_Responsibility) from 2010 to 2020.[5][6]

## Education

Chote completed his secondary education at [St Mary's College](/source/St_Mary's_College%2C_Southampton) in [Bitterne Park](/source/Bitterne_Park), [Southampton](/source/Southampton).[7] In 1989, he graduated in economics from [Queens' College, Cambridge](/source/Queens'_College%2C_Cambridge) (where he was president of the [Cambridge University Social Democrats](/source/Cambridge_University_Social_Democrats) and, after the merger of the SDP with the Liberals, chair of the [Cambridge University Social and Liberal Democrats](/source/Cambridge_Student_Liberal_Democrats)). He then studied journalism at [City University, London](/source/City_University%2C_London), and international public policy at the [School of Advanced International Studies](/source/School_of_Advanced_International_Studies) at [Johns Hopkins University](/source/Johns_Hopkins_University) in the United States.[8][9]

## Career

Chote began his career as a reporter and columnist at *[The Independent](/source/The_Independent)* and was named Young Financial Journalist of the Year in 1993 when working for the *[Independent on Sunday](/source/Independent_on_Sunday)* by the [Wincott Foundation](/source/Wincott_Foundation). He then moved to the *[Financial Times](/source/Financial_Times)* to become Economics Editor in 1995.[8]

From 1999 to 2002, he served as an adviser to the senior management of the [International Monetary Fund](/source/International_Monetary_Fund) in [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington%2C_D.C.), where he worked under [Stanley Fischer](/source/Stanley_Fischer) and [Anne Krueger](/source/Anne_Krueger). Chote was appointed director of the [Institute for Fiscal Studies](/source/Institute_for_Fiscal_Studies) in October 2002.[8] He has also served as a member of the Statistics Advisory Committee of the [Office for National Statistics](/source/Office_for_National_Statistics).

In September 2010, he was appointed chairman of the [Office of Budget Responsibility](/source/Office_of_Budget_Responsibility), succeeding Sir [Alan Budd](/source/Alan_Budd). This appointment was subject to Parliamentary approval, which was received.[10] He started as chairman on 4 October 2010. As of 2015, Chote was paid a salary of between £150,000 and £154,999 by the department, making him one of the 328 most highly paid people in the British public sector at that time.[11] He served two five-year terms and stepped down in 2020.

In March 2021, he began as the inaugural chair of the Northern Ireland Fiscal Council, which was established to provide independent scrutiny of the NI public finances.[12]

On 1 June 2022, Chote was appointed chairman of the [UK Statistics Authority](/source/UK_Statistics_Authority).[3][4] Chote also has a position as a senior advisor at Francis Maude Associates, a consultancy set up by [Francis Maude](/source/Francis_Maude).[13]

In May 2024, Chote was appointed the next president of [Trinity College, Oxford](/source/Trinity_College%2C_Oxford). He took up the position on 1 September 2025, succeeding [Dame Hilary Boulding](/source/Hilary_Boulding) as the college's 29th president.[14]

## Honours and awards

Chote was [knighted](/source/Knight_Bachelor) in the [2021 New Year Honours](/source/2021_New_Year_Honours) for services to fiscal policy and the economy.[15]

## Personal life

Since 1997, Chote has been married to Baroness [Sharon White](/source/Sharon_White_(businesswoman)),[16][17] the former chairman of the [John Lewis Partnership](/source/John_Lewis_Partnership) and previously the chief executive of [Ofcom](/source/Ofcom). The couple has two children.[18] He is the son of Olympic athlete [Morville Chote](/source/Morville_Chote).[19]
