Phillips was born in [Asheville, North Carolina](/source/Asheville%2C_North_Carolina), and received a [B.S.](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) from [Appalachian State University](/source/Appalachian_State_University), an [M.B.A.](/source/Master_of_Business_Administration) from the [University of South Carolina](/source/University_of_South_Carolina), and a [Ph.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) from [Darden Graduate School of Business Administration](/source/Darden_Graduate_School_of_Business_Administration) at the [University of Virginia](/source/University_of_Virginia) in 1997. He is known for his work on [stakeholder theory](/source/stakeholder_theory) and organizational ethics. His published work includes four books (including ''Stakeholder Theory and Organizational Ethics'' and ''The Cambridge Handbook of Stakeholder Theory'') and dozens of scholarly articles, several of which have been reprinted around the world in multiple languages. He is a senior fellow at the Olsson Center for Applied Ethics and section editor at [Journal of Business Ethics](/source/Journal_of_Business_Ethics).
