A '''robe''' is a loose-fitting outer [garment](/source/clothing).<ref name="OED">{{cite web|title=Robe|url=http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/166595|website=Oxford English Dictionary|access-date=22 January 2017}}</ref><ref name="Picken">{{cite book| last = Picken |first = Mary Brooks| title = The Fashion Dictionary | publisher = Funk and Wagnalls |year = 1957| page = 265}}</ref> Unlike garments described as [cape](/source/cape)s or [cloak](/source/cloak)s, robes usually have [sleeve](/source/sleeve)s. The [English](/source/English_language) word ''robe'' derives from [Middle English](/source/Middle_English) ''robe'' ("garment"), [borrowed](/source/loanword) from [Old French](/source/Old_French) ''robe'' ("booty, spoils"), itself taken from the [Frankish](/source/Old_Frankish) word *''rouba'' ("spoils, things stolen, clothes"), and is related to the word ''rob''.<ref name="OED" />
