Before entering politics, Storey was a [farmer](/source/farmer) at Waiterimu in the [Waikato](/source/Waikato_District), and was the president of [Federated Farmers](/source/Federated_Farmers) from 1981 to 1984. Storey was elected  MP for [Waikato](/source/Waikato_(New_Zealand_electorate))  in the [1984 election](/source/1984_New_Zealand_general_election), representing the [National Party](/source/New_Zealand_National_Party). He retained that seat until his retirement at the [1996 election](/source/1996_New_Zealand_general_election).<ref name="Stuff obituary"/>

Storey was appointed a minister in the first term of the [Fourth National Government](/source/Fourth_National_Government_of_New_Zealand). Between 1990 and 1993, he held office principally as [Minister of Transport](/source/Ministry_of_Transport_(New_Zealand)) and also served as [Minister of Statistics](/source/Minister_of_Statistics_(New_Zealand)) (until October 1991), [Minister for the Environment](/source/Ministry_for_the_Environment_(New_Zealand)) (from October 1991), [Minister of Lands](/source/Minister_of_Lands_(New_Zealand)), Minister of Survey and Land Information and Minister in Charge of the Valuation Department.<ref>{{cite book  |last= Wood |first= G.
