1818 play

[John Langford Pritchard](/source/John_Langford_Pritchard) played the role of [Rob Roy](/source/Rob_Roy_MacGregor) in 1825

***Rob Roy*** (***Rob Roy, the Gregarach***) is an 1818 play by English playwright [George Soane](/source/George_Soane),[1] based on the 1817 novel [*Rob Roy*](/source/Rob_Roy_(novel)) by [Walter Scott](/source/Walter_Scott).[2] The play was first performed 25 March 1818 at [Theatre Royal, Drury Lane](/source/Theatre_Royal%2C_Drury_Lane),[1] with a cast including [James William Wallack](/source/James_William_Wallack) as Dougal.[3]

Another popular stage version of *Rob Roy*, by [Isaac Pocock](/source/Isaac_Pocock), performed with traditional Scottish songs, was also premiered in 1818 and frequently revived thereafter.[4]

All except seven of [Walter] Scott's romances were made over into plays, and [*Rob Roy*](/source/Rob_Roy_(novel)) was the most popular of all of them. In 1818 it filled the house for forty-one consecutive nights, which was a great run in those days, and it was a tremendous money-maker. The Scotch people have always been very proud of it, and it is played in Scotland to-day.
