# River Dee (Ireland)

The **River Dee** (Irish: *An Níth*)[1] is a river in eastern [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland), flowing from County Cavan to flow into the [River Glyde](/source/River_Glyde) near the coast, in County Louth.[2][3]

## Legend

In the *[Táin Bó Cúailnge](/source/T%C3%A1in_B%C3%B3_C%C3%BAailnge)*, [Cúchulainn](/source/C%C3%BAchulainn) fights [Ferdia](/source/Ferdia) at Ath Carpat ("chariot ford") on the river Níth.[4] The river takes its name from the Irish *níth*, meaning "combat".[5] The modern name Dee derives from the town of [Ardee](/source/Ardee) (*Baile Átha Fhirdhia*, "town of [Ferdiad](/source/Ferdiad)'s ford").

## Course

The River Dee rises from a spring near [Bailieboro](/source/Bailieborough) in [County Cavan](/source/County_Cavan) and flows in an easterly direction for 37.75 miles (60.75 km)[6] through [County Meath](/source/County_Meath) and [County Louth](/source/County_Louth) before joining with the [River Glyde](/source/River_Glyde) at the village of [Annagassan](/source/Annagassan). The Dee in turn has three main tributaries: the Killary River which joins south of [Drumconrath](/source/Drumconrath) (Drumcondra), County Meath, the Gara River which joins west of [Ardee](/source/Ardee), County Louth, and the White River which flows north from [Dunleer](/source/Dunleer), County Louth. There is one lake on the Dee, Whitewood Lake, near [Nobber](/source/Nobber), County Meath.

## Wildlife

The River Dee is a [brown trout](/source/Brown_trout) fishery.[7]
