# Ritter Range

The **Ritter Range** is a small mountain range within [California](/source/California)'s [Sierra Nevada](/source/Sierra_Nevada). Most of the mountain range lies within the [Ansel Adams Wilderness](/source/Ansel_Adams_Wilderness).

The [John Muir Trail](/source/John_Muir_Trail) passes by many lakes within the Ritter Range. The most prominent peaks of the Ritter Range are [Mount Ritter](/source/Mount_Ritter), at 13,143 feet, [Banner Peak](/source/Banner_Peak), at 12,936 feet, [Rodgers Peak](/source/Rodgers_Peak_(California)), and the [Minarets](/source/Minarets_(California)), a group of sharp peaks south of Mt. Ritter. [Thousand Island Lake](/source/Thousand_Island_Lake), [Ediza Lake](/source/Ediza_Lake), [Garnet Lake](/source/Garnet_Lake_(California)), [Lake Catherine](/source/Lake_Catherine_(California)), [Minaret Lake](/source/Minaret_Lake), [Cecile Lake](/source/Cecile_Lake), and [Shadow Lake](/source/Shadow_Lake_(California)) all lie within the Ritter Range, and are accessible by trail.

The range is named for [Carl Ritter](/source/Carl_Ritter), who had been a teacher of [Josiah Whitney](/source/Josiah_Whitney) when he was a student in Berlin in the 1840s."[1]

The Ritter Range, near the [Minarets](/source/Minarets_(California)) and [Minaret Lake](/source/Minaret_Lake), was the site of the plane crash of [Steve Fossett](/source/Steve_Fossett) in 2007.[2]
