He played in the [Football League](/source/Football_League) with [Southend United](/source/Southend_United_F.C.), [Peterborough United](/source/Peterborough_United_F.C.), [Rushden & Diamonds](/source/Rushden_%26_Diamonds_F.C.) and [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.). Hanlon also played [non-League football](/source/non-League_football) with [Welling United](/source/Welling_United_F.C.), [Stevenage Borough](/source/Stevenage_F.C.), [Weymouth](/source/Weymouth_F.C.) and [Cambridge United](/source/Cambridge_United_F.C.). He was forced to retire aged 28 with a knee injury.

Hanlon had a stint in 2007 managing [St Albans City](/source/St_Albans_City_F.C.) in the [Conference South](/source/Conference_South). He also had a couple of seasons managing his sons Abbots Langley Youth U7's-U8's. In July 2012, he was appointed as joint manager alongside [Paul Hughes](/source/Paul_Hughes_(footballer)) at [Kings Langley](/source/Kings_Langley_F.C.) in the [Spartan South Midlands Football League](/source/Spartan_South_Midlands_Football_League) Division One.
