# Rippon Tor

**Rippon Tor** is a striking [tor](/source/Tor_(rock_formation)) on eastern [Dartmoor](/source/Dartmoor), in England, that stands at 473 metres (1,552 ft) above sea level.[1] It has three cairns, of which are some of Dartmoor's largest, a [triangulation pillar](/source/Triangulation_pillar), and several rock piles that overlook the northern high moors near [Fernworthy Forest](/source/Fernworthy_Forest) and [Great Mis Tor](/source/Great_Mis_Tor). Field boundaries surround the tor.

The views extend down to [North Hessary Tor](/source/North_Hessary_Tor) around [Princetown](/source/Princetown) and [Holne Ridge](/source/Holne_Ridge). On most days the [River Teign](/source/Teign_Estuary) is visible with the sea at [Teignmouth](/source/Teignmouth). The clay pits in between [Kingsteignton](/source/Kingsteignton) and [Bovey Tracey](/source/Bovey_Tracey) are also usually visible. Most of the other eastern tors can be seen, such as popular [Haytor](/source/Haytor) and [Saddle Tor](/source/Saddle_Tor). The [logan stone](/source/Logan_stone) known as the Nutcracker[2] is nearby. The tor can be accessed from the Hemsworthy Gate Car Park by the B3387 from [Widecombe-in-the-Moor](/source/Widecombe) to [Bovey Tracey](/source/Bovey_Tracey).

[Rippon Tor Rifle Range](/source/Rippon_Tor_Rifle_Range) lies nearby on Horridge Common and the tor is close to the source of the [River Ashburn](/source/River_Ashburn), a tributary of the [River Dart](/source/River_Dart).
