**John Richard Yancey** (born November 4, 1962) is an American author who writes works of [suspense](/source/Suspense), fantasy, and science fiction aimed at young adults. His best known works include the [*Alfred Kropp* series](/source/Alfred_Kropp_series), *[The Monstrumologist](/source/The_Monstrumologist)* series, and [*The 5th Wave* series](/source/The_5th_Wave_(series)), which was adapted into [a feature film of the same name](/source/The_5th_Wave_(film)) in 2016.

## Biography

Yancey was born on November 4, 1962, in [Miami, Florida](/source/Miami%2C_Florida). He was adopted several days after his birth and grew up in [Lakeland, Florida](/source/Lakeland%2C_Florida). His father, [Quillian Yancey](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Quillian_Yancey&action=edit&redlink=1), was an attorney and politician who served in the [Florida House of Representatives](/source/Florida_House_of_Representatives) for six years,[2] while his mother was a legal secretary.[1]

Yancey graduated from [Lakeland Senior High School](/source/Lakeland_Senior_High_School_(Florida)) and studied at [Florida Southern College](/source/Florida_Southern_College) for a year, where he majored in communications. He then spent a year at [Florida State University](/source/Florida_State_University) before transferring to [Roosevelt University](/source/Roosevelt_University) in [Chicago](/source/Chicago), where he received a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in English.[3] He then moved back to Florida and enrolled in law school, where he spent a year before dropping out. He then taught English classes and worked at a community theater before getting hired by the [Internal Revenue Service](/source/Internal_Revenue_Service) in 1991, where he worked as a tax collector for the next twelve years, living primarily in [Knoxville, Tennessee](/source/Knoxville%2C_Tennessee). His first novel was published in 2003, and he quit his job at the IRS the following year to write full-time.[1]

Yancey has three adult children and resides in [Gainesville, Florida](/source/Gainesville%2C_Florida), with his wife as of 2016.[4]
